  • dogmatic Do the ATAC cleats (or whatever that shiznit that attaches to the bottom of the shoes) fit all widely available shoes?
I think I'm going to give it a try one of these days.

fit any mtb shoe with 2 holes me thinks

  • Hate eggbeaters. They unclip too easily and aren't as adjustable as SPDs. Had a very close call using them once.
Atac's for the win but spds cranked to the max will do you well.

  • ...or better leg braking technique ;o)

  • My braking technique is perfect thank you very much. Whenever I need to stop suddenly I call 50*14 so he can come and take me down :]

  • if you do go down the spd route, make sure you get the single release cleats, had a few dodgy un-clip's, not fun brakeless, changed mine over about 6 months ago, no probs since.

  • yes but which are the single release and which are the multi release? ;o)

  • the ones that say "single release" are............... :P
    multi release

    single release

not nessarally black or silver, pointed tops= single release

  • Stefano Ok sorry, 48 (chainring) x 16 (freewheel/ cog) I wanted to say. I didn’t know what goes first.

Anyway, my point was: is there any additional reason for gearing down if I move to fixed. At the moment, with singlespeed freewheel, it goes quite well in London and I managed some weekend rides London to Brighton with the exception of the last hill where I had to walk :-(
What if I move to fixed?

I ride 48x16 (by any chance have you just got your mitts on a bianchi pista? don't be ashamed my off the peg brother...) and yeah i can't physically get it up Muswell Hill. And I'm not the quickest off the mark on hill starts. In fact to be fair I'm gonna sort out some now sprocketage because i'm about 40% thigh and rising. It's alright though i do commute up archway every day and it's very doable, if not a breeze...

  • 31t®um the ones that say "single release" are............... :P
    multi release

No no no, pointed tops = multirelease.
    SH-51 = Single Release
    SH-55 = Multi Release
How come this subject is always confusing to people? :) (oh, and no offense, but i am right about this)

And, one reason not to run 48x16 is that 16*3 = 48, so if you start playing with skidstops you'll eat the same part(s) of the tire every time you skid.
To train your fixie-technique i'd recommend 48*19 for regular street use.

  • ???
    ????

    single???
    confused me now,
previously had the round toped ones, marked on packet as multi release, kept unclipping
cahnged to sm-sh50(pointed tops) marked as single release on the packet, stopped unclipping?????

  • Don't you think that the SH50's are just float-less cleats?
The SH52's are all weird because they are for the PD-M858 pedal only.

I use SH51's, round top, single release, no problems.

Btw, howcome nobody notices that the multirelease cleats are marked with an "M" ? :)

  • na, i definately have float................

    +1

  • Sorry Murtle, I agree with Haj on this one.
I've got the single release cleats (SH-51) and they are rounded. If I was riding multi release cleats I'd have definitely unclipped and not be typing on the interweb at this present moment in time.

My previous multi-release cleats simply wouldn't allow me to throw my bike around as much as I do.

  • Could it not be to do with the pedals as well. I got cheapo spds cant remember model number but if they are silver they are multi release but if black they are single. maybe a mix match of pedals and cleats are creating the confusion.

  • ahhhh.....just found this...........SM-SH50 has been replaced by SM-SH51. And SM-SH55 has been replaced by SM-SH56. CommentAuthorasm; CommentTimeDec 7th 2007.

  • @OCD, i'm using 10 year old silver spd's, cheapo's too, had no problems with them, still run really smooth.

fnckit!! any one got some time cleats :)

  • Sometimes my dreams and reality get mixed up. It has clearly happened here. I once got in an argument with a friend cos swore blind that Greenday were from australia!!! lost 20 pounds over it. I was so sure anyways..... Infact sod it in my worl all silver pedals are multirelase and all black pedals are single release cloeateless or not and Greeday are Australian!!!

+1 to this - you guys running 48x16, if you start skidding at all then change your ratio. You will eat through a tyre in literally days with that ratio. One skid spot, two if you are a two footed kidder.

48 x 19 will give you 19 skid spots, which is practically the whole tyre...

  • mick, i think those are the chrome ones, the cages tend to bend, as opposed to the stainless ones.

  • yep, can't say i'd recommend 48/16 for skidding, along with wearing tyres like a madman it's quite hard work...

  • was running 48x18, for 6 months, now running 47x18, whole tyre skidaroos

  • OCD Greeday are Australian!!!

that would explain why their noise makes my ears bleed...
