Do most of you ride short distances ie around town? would you chose a fg/ss for longer distances or use a geared bike?
-

a proper road going fixed bike with drops/hoods is fine for 30-60 mile rides around the south east i wouldn't want to do it on a track bike with risers though

most of my journies are commutes, 12 miles a day up the A10 (stamford hill and all) on a 47 x 15 fixed. i imagine the fixed/geared barrier is around the 100 mile mark, but i wouldn't know, i'm an east end hipster. :D

did i say 100? i meant 30 - 60... :D

Furnace Creek 508 is a famous ultra endurance ride in the US that has a fixed option: http://epictrain.blogspot.com/2007/10/furnace-creek-508-fixed-gear-solo-race_17.html
fixedwheelnut and quite a few audaxers ride fixed for long distances. There's not limit really, assuming you get along with your bike of choice.

I bought a paddy wagon recently, my first foray into fg/ss and am amazed at the lack of drag/friction in the drive train. am commuting 15-20 miles a day but wondered what i could achieve in a day if i pushed it. Thinking of trying a ride to my girlfriends which is about 40 odd miles. was just wondering if i was mad or not!

keep a £50 in your hipster tight black jeans for that emergency taxi and go for it :D

40mi is piss easy, considering you're doing 15-20 per day.

Ooooo can't do that, its my last ditch stand at pretending I am not getting old. Besides I have to go down to the South West every few weeks and couldn't face going on the train.

Google fixed gear / fixed wheel Audax. Plenty of poeple do reeeeeally long ride on fixed (not track geometry though as Mr Smith states above) Paris Breast Paris is 1200km and done with a time limit of 90 hrs, so not much time for snoozing! YOu will be fine on 40 miles. Just take a tube and pump and a multi tool just incase. Enjoy.
Being new to single speeds can you guys tell me the kind of distances you can cover in a day on a ss/fg ? have just come from geared bikes and am wondering how far you could expect to make it in a day. Lets say on a mixture of flat and mildly hilly roads.
