  • BRM // sunny perth dude, hoping to hook up with Yang while i'm there , he's probably rollin round freo on his bob jackson at the mo

  • Sweet. Have a good one.
I'll be heading home in Sept, for a month or so.
Get down to LC and have a pale ale or two.

  • I'm moving house and can no longer keep my current insurance plan.
As such my bikes will no longer be insured, this upsets me greatly.

Is cycle specific insurance any good, these appears to be my only option as I'm moving into a shared house.

    Any recommendations?

  • I had mine with E+L, but had nothing but trouble with them.

    Avoid.

  • Understood. That's one of my short list :]

  • M&S home insurance covers your bike in and out of the home up to about £3k

don't know what kind of cover you'd get from S&M tho…

  • I've had insurance through Pavilion (via British Cycling) and not only is it very expensive but the small print states that if “any removable part” is stolen without the frame being stolen at the same time they will not pay out. I will never use them again.

  • @ Wayne, I don't think M&S will offer home insurance for shared housing. I'll look into it though.
@ Slug, I've already crossed them off my list.

Any one who's interested, the current winning broker is via LCC's website as they seem to have done the hard graft for us.
    Will keep you informed.

  • Interested in how you go with this, as I'll by doing the same thing in a month or two when I (fingers crossed) move house.
Was your old home insurance worth a mention?

  • Endsleigh is pretty much the only company that'll give you insurance for a shared house.
I'm not sure what they're like with bikes though. They do have an option for taking things out of the house, but I'm not sure on the details of it.
    Worth a phone call though.
I wouldn't mind knowing what the best place is to get just your bike insured. For when I eventually build a bike worth stealing ;-)
    K

  • Yeah, I need to sort mine out Object..

Don't suppose you know if any of them cover crashes as well as theft?

    Not that I'm planning any..

  • yer Endsleigh do indeed do shared house insurance, its not cheap though, as a student to cover all my things it would cost me about £220!! but that is to take them outside too. the worse bit is that that doesn't include my bike, they don't allow bikes worth over £100 on the standard insurance so you have to take out bike insurance which they quoted about £130 or something like that. All seemed a bit much for me, i'd be intrigued to know how other people have insured their bike though.

looking forward to hearing the answers to this one. my understanding is that the LCC one is the best, too - about the same amount of money as elsewhere, but they're used to dealing with cyclists and so actually help. also, there's bonuses like 3rd party insurance, health insurance, and so on (or, maybe that's just if you join LCC). you get a further bit of money off if you also say that your bike is marked in someway: i usually indicate that it is, and that it's 'POSTCODE' is stamped on it. gets me another 5% off, anyways.

that said, i haven't got insurance: i spent the money (60-odd quid) on another, good lock at the time. now, i don't leave my bike outside without locks for very long, and certainly not overnight. i have a bit more cash now, tho, and thinking of getting insurance too....

  • I have M+S in a shared flat to cover 10k's worth of bikes plus hi fi, laptops etc.

In both names. You have to call them up though, they don't offer it on their website.

  • ditto the above but they don't like the kind of flat/house with a common entrance and separate lockable bedsits where you don't know the other people.

  • Are their only two of you in the property.
I've found loads of places who do shared accomodation for two people but very few for more than that.

  • yes only 2, they said no at first but when i explained i wasn't a student and had known the other person for 10 years and it wasn't a bedsit but a normal flat they were cool.
i can see their point really because those shared places always end up having some random with dodgy light fingered mates

  • M+S are a bit particular about British Standard locks on ground floor doors and windows, which can get very expensive.

  • yep, only two.

Separate rooms I might add :-)

  • Who has it? Where did you get it from? And how much is it? Need to get it today.

  • I know it's a boring question...

  • Marks & Spencers?? Didn't even know they had insurance.

  • See if you can get it on your house insurance, you may need to specify value.
Otherwise E&L keep putting brochures in cycling plus. 08449 809 465
