  • I'll probably be there anyway tomorrow to have some boulder problems solved, more or less 6.30- 7
    it's 11 for guests...

  • it's ok for me to go next wednesday
Are you guys all gonna be doing bouldering or is anyone willing to do some ropework too ?

  • I'm always up for rope work but as there will be lots of new people it may be sensible just to boulder.

  • Guys, I'm really sorry but I can't make this again this week.

I'm having a really crappy time at the moment - a close friend of mine dropped dead with a brain anneurysm last Wednesday and it has really thrown me. Going to be meeting up with some mutual friends on Wednesday, probably to get drunk and be sad.

Sorry, but I'm sure you all understand. Hope you manage to have a good climb.

  • That sucks ass dude. Hope life starts treating you better soon.
As it's likely I'll be working should we give the climb a miss this Werdnesday and diarise next week instead.

  • so are we climbing tomorrow then ?

  • You guys should sort out a trip to Calshot, they've got an indoor ski slope, climbing wall(s) - no idea what level they're at, and of course, the smallest indoor track in the country. Something like 125 meters?? G FORCE!!

  • I thought I'd tack this on the end of this thread.

I want to learn to climb not for climbing sake on a wall but to beable to take up more challenges outside on routes.

So is the best way to go on one of the courses ran at a climbing center or get a friend to show you how all the clips / ropes work on over a few sessions and work my way up like that?

  • you should start by piling up furniture against the wall and seeing if you can scale it successfully.
Then you can move up to stairs, whilst carrying a heavy rucksack filled with books.

I just climbed on top of my desk in less than 5 minuets, How am I doing?

  • I bumped into Object17 this morning and we got to chatting about climbing. It occured to me that quite a lot of people on here seem to be into climbing. Would anyone be up for getting together a LondonFGSS trip to the Castle sometime?

    Bring on the spider skills...

    Massive B U M P !

I'm well up for a climb. Haven't been in ages!

  • I have been to The Castle a few times with qualified mates . Its a good workout but just dont go there at 7pm weekdays as the place can get packed . As for courses - http://www.castle-climbing.co.uk/courses-and-bookings/courses-and-bookings.html

  • Before my crash, pigfarmer and I planned a bike ride to Harrison's Rocks in Kent, followed by 3 hours bouldering and some pints at Groombridge. I used to do Ben Nevis and Mont Blanc in my youth.

Thanks I know where the courses are but I was wondering if they are really worth it or if it's better to get an experienced friend to take you on a few sessions to explain the ropes e.t.c

The Castle courses are expensive, but from what i am told, reasonably good. If you do have mates who can let you tag along, my view is that you will enjoy learning a lot more from them and you can spend the money saved in the pub. Also, if you're planning on climbing routes (on ropes) you'll need at least one friend anyhow.

  • I'm new to the saaarf and would be up for some outdoor trad climbing. I'm not very good though.. last climb was a hard severe. Haven't been in ages.

  • Hola Toxic, not much in the way of trad in these parts unfortunately. Lots of really nice top roping on sandstone just outside Tunbridge Wells and really good sport climbing down on Portland though. Not quite as 10p : 5p sphincter scary as trad but still really good climbing.

  • top-roping on sand stone sounds cool.

I miss the old derbyshire gritstone - it's like getting a manicure at the same time!

Thanks for the info. It's an aim of mine to have ago over the winter some time so I'll look into both routes.

  • i'm up for this when/if i'm back in london. i've been a few times, but am far from good.

  • ok, so I had my first taste of climbing last night. Went to the castle and absolutely loved it. Fingers and arms are a little sore today (to be expected though eh) but really enjoyed the challenge of it.

Went with a friend from work (who's a fairly regular climber) and she showed me some of the basics on the boulders of the upper level, Lust & Envy.
Would be well up for going again!

  • I reckon it's about time I started climbing again.

  • i used to climb a lot when i was living in rio
i would love to come back too

  • I watched that film last night(don't know the name as missed the start) about the German climbers - The Hubert Brothers, Thomas & Alexander
Fuck me, what nutters - literally running up mountains
