  • got a Brooks swallow classic in the post today -quoted weight 360g - actual weight 580g.

what the fuck is going on? is there a non-titanium version? i wasn't aware of it

  • yep. all terrain cycles have sent me the chrome one. fucking knobs.

  • they really are the most useless bunch of muppets. 3 weeks it took to get that wrong.

  • and presumably charge you the price of the Ti one no doubt

  • hmmm, that's weird - I didn't know they made a chrome Swallow. I really like the Swallow shape, but can't afford Ti.... Can't seem to find any mention of it elsewhere :/

  • i think brooks seem to arbitrarily change things, my swift doesn't have bag loops but some do.
i think i would rather have the ti swift than a steel swallow for a similar price.

  • i didn't know they made a chrome one either, but it's on their website. chrome and titanium.

thing is, most online retailers don't make the distinction, and seem to be charging the chrome price , but mention titanium rails in the product description. i've ordered another one from Wiggle, and i think it's going to be the same story, even though it says ti.

  • trade descriptions act. if it says ti then they should give you a ti one.
i would phone all-terrain and ask them to send you the ti one
(after taking a screengrab with the price and ti info)

  • to be honest i can't stand to deal with them anymore. They don't have Ti in stock, and they have fucked up this order for weeks. they are going to refund, and i am buying from wiggle for 131 .99! ! Again, this is the chrome price, but clearly says titanium etc. i have asked wiggle to confirm it will be the ti version.

thing is the packaging makes no mention either way about what it is made of, i bet some people just shrug and assume they have the Ti version.

  • hmm, same problem seems to be happening with the swift: on brookssaddles.com the chrome swift is ~90, the Ti swift is ~175; on wiggle the "Ti" swift is ~90... shurely shome mishtake?

  • yep. there's a big brooks racket going on out there, and i'm going to blow it wide open.

The search for the titanium rails.
A quest which will take him to the edges of the internet, blowing open and international saddle ring.

  • £99 for the Titanium swift at chain reaction cycles... I've always been very impressed with the speed of their dispatch
    Linky winky

  • Is there any other way to telling other than weighing it?

  • Aren't Ti black and chrome, well, chrome?

  • Nimhus you didn't strike me as a weight weaney ;o)

  • He's fscking heavier than me and worried about saddle weight? Something's not right in the universe..

Brooks Swallow Classic. I can only find Ti versions?? The steel ones have different model names.

    £145 (ti) http://www.cyclesense.co.uk/products.php?plid=m14b141s328p1813&tbv=BROOKS_Swallow_Classic_Titanium_COMPONENTS_Saddles_-_Leather
    £140 (ti) http://www.spacycles.co.uk/products.php?plid=m2b11s144p628
    £136 (ti) http://www.allterraincycles.co.uk/product/100206.html

ATC only appear to have a ti version. Are you sure you don't have the ti version? Are your scales accurate?

    hehe

  • http://www.brooksengland.com/press/ "Now also with Steel Rails!" but none of the retailers I can find have 'em..

360g (ti) versus 490g (steel). Whatever you have, the claimed vs. actual weight is well off..

  • Magnet?

    http://www.key-to-metals.com/Article122.htm
Magnetic Properties. If a metal is placed in a magnetic field, a force is exerted on it. The intensity of the magnetization, called M, can be measured in terms of the force exerted and its relation to the magnetic field strength, H, depending upon the susceptibility, K, which is a property of the metal.

Metals have a wide variance in susceptibility and can be classified in three groups:

    * The diamagnetic substances in which K is small and negative, and thus are feebly repelled by a magnetic field; examples are copper, silver, gold and bismuth.
    * The paramagnetic substances in which K is small and positive, and thus are slightly attracted by a magnetic field; the alkali, alkaline and the nonferromagnetic transition metals fall in this group (it can be seen that titanium is slightly paramagnetic).
    * The ferromagnetic substances, which have a large K value and are positive; iron, cobalt, nickel, and gallium fall under this heading.

An important feature of Group 3, besides the strong attraction in a magnetic field, is the fact that these metals retain their magnetization after being removed from the magnetic field.

Most of the more important physical properties of titanium have now been indicated.

  • I'm sure it's the chrome one - ATC confirmed it, and it weighs a ton. i knew as soon as i picked it up.

wiggle claim to be shipping me the Ti version for 131 quid. we shall see.
