Painting parts

  • Instead of buying new parts I was thinking of pianting some old bits and bobs I have: Stem and chainset in particular. Does anyone have any recommendations. Could I ust give them a good clean and rattle can it?

  • Yes.

    Clean, sand, primer, spray.

  • Thanks.

  • Lots of light coats
Sand between them with very fine paper
Choose a primer from the same manufacturer as the paint
Clear coat to finish (if you want a glossy finish)
Leave for ages before remounting/rebuilding (days not hours).

. . . or if you have £40 spare (probably still cheaper than buying a load of new stuff) you could get a bunch of stuff powdercoated - much tougher finish - no drying time - Armourtex in Hackney charge you per colour, so you could have stem, cranks, frame etc etc all done for the same £40.

  • Wow. The calipers and levers look amazing. You mentioned powdercoating having a tougher finish, will the rattle-can finish be easily chipped? or flake off? That is my main concern.

  • If done properly and the parts are in 'non-contact' areas - no problems.

  • i rattlecanned my chainset. i'm happy with it but it does chip off where there is contact with other moving parts (ie, the teeth of the chainring are silver from all the rubbing...
