my dad has a shed full of bikes like these, i mean, about 40 of them, they all need some attention. The only decent one is the fixed wheel tricycle he did up a couple of years ago.

i know part of this is the hunting, but i got this book for xmas basically...
100 Years of bicycle component and accessory design isbn 1-892495-09-0probably worth checking out... i've snapped a page on pedals... good for sourcing the right dates.
I've taken a few snaps let me know if you need to see anything specific... hope this helps.

If you are looking before 1920 you are talking serious money, however 1930 style road race/fast tourer frames are not that hard to come by & not nearly so expensive. I have a 1935 complete bike & a 1939 race frame spare if you ar interested, depends what frame size you are looking for. Both would make a good basis for such a project.

Velocine looks similar to your great granpappies?

how much for though?

Not sure if the moderator allows people to sell stuff via this forum & i do.t want to p**s anybody off. But generally prices would be in the region of £100 for a straight 1930's frame & forks that needs paint(and most of this age do of course) & a few hundred for a bike with period components, as bits such as pre war saddles/ bars/ brakes/ drivetrain have a high value all on their own. If I'm not breaking any forum guidelines I would be happy to give more detail.

shinscar - cheers man, appreciate that. might try and find the book in the library.
i think the pedals look a bit like the bottom left one in the book. hard to tell from the old photo though.
what's velocine? couldn't find it on google. maybe hippy can help :-Pmercianary - you reckon your dad has any bits he wants to sell?
yampydog - yeah. you should be alright to sell stuff on here.
he's already got the bake lever and rod mech, the lamp, and bell!anyone know the names of bike companies around then, or what kind of bike that's likely to be?

what an excellent picture!
the title needs only be "really old bike" as in those days I think all bicycles were fixed wheel.
"fixie" disrespects it ....
er..man.

This might help too....

man, you're in for a world of pain. it's hard enough to find 1950's stuff ;) . For example a NOS pair of brampton pedals 1950 is £90 :O

Trying to find the maker would be soooo difficult. To give you an idea this link shows all the bike manufacturers in one midlands town (Coventry) around the turn of the century. In 1896 just one of these, The Premier Cycle Co was churning out 20,000 bikes a year on it own.

Sorry i digress

Just wondering if anyone knows much about seriously old road bikes.
My dad wants to build up something like this...
It's from around 1910. Pretty stripped down, fast kind of bike for it's day apparently. Single front rod brake, fixed gear, etc.
Anyone know where I would find parts like this?
That's my great-granddad in the photo btw. I've still got the badge he's wearing, it's for the Bow Cycling Club.
