I've got one of those depressing £20 specialized helmets that most people buy from Evans cos it's the cheapest. I never wear it though. I'm getting on for 30, but I think it's still that little streak of 'i am indestructible' that will probably fade away within a couple more years. Or if I get my fiancee up the duff or something. Mostly i think i'm just obsessed with my appearance.
On the subject of safety gear though, i did find some 80's chequered BMX elbow and knee pads when i was back visiting my parents, and come to think of all the spills i've had it's only knees and elbows that seem to get bloodied - you don't often see them being worn around London...
