  • this may or may not have been done before, but whats people views on safety wear. helmets, reflectors, lights, etc.

i personally dont use a helmet or any body gear. as for the bike i have flashing front and rear lights.

also, safety gear for races. this is mainly for the monopoly race in march. as its my first race i dunno if i should helmet up or not?

  • the only argument against wearing a helmet is looks and if you feel thats a good enough reason to run the risk its your choice. i like my head.

  • Not convinced the Monopoly ride is a race!
If it's like most other night rides it'll be a fairly sedate affair, maybe a few sprints here and there but it's not lke an alleycat or anything.

  • I always wear a helmet, dont want to get into a big discussion re pros and cons etc (this isnt cyclingplus after all) but it makes my head feel safer.

The courier bag I usually use is a Howies Beamer, ie really really reflective , so thats that covered too ;)

  • im pretty stoked its not a race after seeing the route distance. i cant go all out for 17 miles......maybe 16.

i probably will bring a helmet. im not from london (fakeondoner) and i have no idea what to expect.

plus ive had a few crashes on the most simple of mistakes.

    SORTED

  • Always wear a condom. That my advice.

Provenrad where did you find this? What's it called (damn designers I can't read the name!)

  • just to clear this up sonicboom, Monopoly ride is not a race, it is a night ride witha few challenges(treasure hunt style) on the way so there is something to do, but it has nothing to do with speed

  • i just got a helmet... its a cheepo bell road one, and execpt for it pushing down on my hat i dont even notice it. im sold now if i can only find where i put it....

  • oh shit everyon ehates it and its 'conceptual'. Damn I like it, better get back to my yoghurt-weaving

  • I've always had cheap and cheerful helmets. Has anyone tried the really pricey lids? Specialized do some for over £100. Are these notably lighter, more comfortable than the cheaper ones?

I used to have an old specialised one which in the day was £79. They have got much lighter now but they are very good lids. When I get some cash I might get another one. I am using a cheap Bell helmet at the moment and it is not as light weight / stylish.

  • so tempted to post sheldon's mugshot you know.

  • do it. see what happens

    i fuckin dear you.

  • Too late, what a man!

  • Also, what is that all over his hat? Oh god... actually I don't want to know.

  • rip

  • its a sad day for cycling

  • Sheldon - he loved it!

  • ads Also, what is that all over his hat? Oh god... actually I don't want to know.

Apparently, it stops your head getting too cold in winter.

Usually due to the number of vents and lightness of it really. The most I pay for a lid is around 60 quid.

I almost always ride with a Giro Xen on - mtbing one but better than nothing. Most people don't seem to wear them on fixed bikes.

I've split a fair few of them now off road and would not want to try it on road.

  • Back on topic...

I don't care what I look like as long as I get half a chance of being seen by motorists.
3 front lights, 2 rear + reflective tape on mudguards.
Scotch-lite bands to put round my legs, reflective strips on rucsack and a very bright day-glo DHB top with reflective strips on it.

...plus I make random weaving movements every now and again - that scares the shit out of drivers, ha!
