• Hi all,

Been enjoying my 2008 Fillmore for a while but am now getting the itch to upgrade.

Being a novice regarding components, I'm curious how good the components are on the Fillmore and what people feel I should upgrade first to improve performance/weight.

My initial impressions are: cheap brakes, ok saddle, heavy-ish wheels.

Not sure about chainset, cranks etc. Don't know enough about them to comment on how they perform.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

John

• Get some Koolstop brake pads, then work on upgrading your lungs and legs ;)

• best advice there.

replace stuff when it wears out/breaks

• or, buy stuff you fancy, when you fancy it.

• Replace everything.

• nimhbus or, buy stuff you fancy, when you fancy it.

capitalist pig.

• hmm the heaviest component is the frame, so that should be the first to go ;)

• crankset. or chainring. they come with 3/32, get something 1/8.

• cheap noisy rear cog? get an EAI or similar
wheels still going round? spokes holding tension? keep them until they fall apart
bars the correct width? comfortable? anatomic but prefer traditional? get some new ones
forks steel and want lighter/more comfort? get carbon ones.
saddle uncomfortable? looks hideous? get a brooks.
if the brakes work get some decent pads, swissstop/koolstop
having to retension chain? get an MKS chaintug
failing that get some new bar tape.

failing that clean your chain, relube and fit some new tyres, I have just done this and it feels like a new bike :-)

• hassanr crankset. or chainring. they come with 3/32, get something 1/8.

er, why?

• Upgrading wheels will make the most difference definately. There is a lot of experience on this site so maybe tell the folks what your price in mind is?

Secondary, would be changing to 1/8" chain and then drivetrain. How heavy are you, do you really stomp on the pedals?

I have never broken a 3/32 chain, but I have cracked two rollers on two different good quality chains (over 20 years riding including 7 when I was racing/training to race, and on a freewheel - so not very often, but this is not something i would want to happen on a fixed, or even have to think about the possibility, I have all 1 1/8).

• anything that has bontrager written on it

• pedal harder.

• radicalrik anything that has bontrager written on it

except the tyres

• don't expect a sensible answer!

• RPM
hassanr crankset. or chainring. they come with 3/32, get something 1/8.

er, why?
because the frame is really close to road geometry (lower bb) and they come with 170mm cranks. pedal strike? and the c-ring is a cheap road one that they'e left the ramps and pins off of. why else?

• how is changing to 1/8 going to stop the pedal strike? you nutter

it's a road bike, yes. why does he want to put track stuff on it? he's gonna ground out at manchester whatever cranks he's using

• if it's not broken why fix it?, not heard of pedal strike being an issue on filmores.

• of course it won't stop pedal strike, but it will strengthen the drivetrain. and pedal strike on the street tends to be a little less fun than on a velodrome. no one said 'track', just shorter. stronglight or sugino rd's? why's is this confusing and why so defensive about it?

• Not defensive, just sometimes people recommend 1/8 over 3/32 citing strength as a reason, which isn't true.

• jhclare am now getting the itch to upgrade.

just trying to offer a suggestion. sorry.

• a whole 3/32 drivetrain can often be just as strong as 1/8, but when running 1/8 chain on 3/32 chainring i've seen some issues with teeth twisting when the chain pulls towards one side, when it stretches. and a 'unified' drivetrain is often quieter.

• I agree, although I know lots of trackies do use 3/32 rings with 1/8 chain and cog..

personally I'd keep it all the same.

• i've always been curious as to why they do that. is it weight?

• so 9/10 speed chains aren't strong enough? i just don't see how it has to be 1/8 unless you are chris hoy, tour riders put drivetrains through a fair bit of abuse without issues.
i run 1/8 as that's what came on my bike but i would happily run 3/32 (i will probably run a 3/32 dura-ace track drivetrain on my next bike)
