    DESIGNING FOR LONDON 2012:
    THE VELOPARK
    28 NOV – 23 FEB 2008

The London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic cycling races, consist of four disciplines; Track, Road, Mountain Bike, and BMX events.

The London 2012 VeloPark, to be based in the north of the Olympic Park, will include a Velodrome to host the Olympic and Paralympic indoor track cycling events and a purpose built BMX circuit to host Olympic BMX events.

The invited teams were asked to develop concept designs for the 6,000 seat Velodrome, symbolising its architectural importance as a key 2012 venue in the heart of the Olympic Park and its significance in legacy as a regional centre for British Cycling. The designers were also asked to reflect that the VeloPark should represent an important hub of activity in the north of the Olympic Park after the Games.

The Velodrome will be a permanent expression of cycling excellence in the UK and the architects were asked to reflect this in their designs, along with inclusiveness, security, sustainability, operability and financial viability.

After 2012 the VeloPark will consist of a central 6,000 seat Velodrome, a BMX Circuit, Mountain Bike Course, Cycle Speedway and Road Cycling circuit, providing new facilities for both training and events, by elite and community users.
