Huh? I was talking about the shower/cafe/workshop facilities in the CBD for cycle commuters. What a wicked idea.. LONDON.

sht...that was my idea for the 'dragons'. thought bout it early last year cos work didnt have showers and lockers. idea was to get a warehouse-like place in the middle of the city and convert it into a bike lockup/shower/locker/cafe facility. valet system so locks arent necessary. lockers for storing clothes for the week. and of course showers. surely there's a need for this. loads more cyclists in the future im sure and prob get some subsidy from gov't for eco benefits. city of london should put some money into this

Sounds like a very good idea. Need a lot of investment beforehand and the location would be crucial obviously.
Hopefully employers will start to include shower rooms in their premises in the next few years rather than turn them (and usually disabled toilets also) into the cleaner's cupboard.
(Reminds me I discovered a shower in the maze of corridors in my department at uni the other day - better still be there next year when my ride will be longer...)

Auckland is where I rode my 1st fixed gear, in 1999. The Japanese kids with loads of cash rode converted Kleins/PoshBrand bikes.
Very progressive idea these facilities, I'm not at all surprised it's happend in NZ.

I'm pretty sure that big huge bike shop under the arches in london bridge have a locked area for peoples bikes and they charge either weekly or monthly, surely showers are the natural next step...

There's some kind of rule in Oz where new properties have to provide x bike parking spots. I'm sure it's some shite just to keep greenies happy but it might help?
The place in the fire escape where my bike isn't allowed to be kept due to being a fire hazard (bullshit) is still occupied by an empty fscking cupboard.
I use it to hang my stenchy jacket on. I can't wait to start fighting for spots in the city during summer! Wanky fscking place!

I used to use Bike Park in Covent Garden to store my bike during the day, no shower but very convenient.
Anybody know if that is still going? -

Looks like there are going to be a new chain of bike stations opening this year; first one with 90 spaces in holborn in march. Someone beat you to it fatboyralph (PS I've whispered you re. Euston bike parking)

hippy The place in the fire escape where my bike isn't allowed to be kept due to being a fire hazard (bullshit) is still occupied by an empty fscking cupboard.
Office managers and their selective enforcement of fire regs has been the bane of my life for some time now.
My knowledge of the sketchy holes and cubboards in the annals of my office has become second-to-none. This week I are mostly be using the wierd basement room full of electrical-supply wierdness. Looks like Dr frankenstein's lab in there. -

Anybody know if that is still going? No longer open but I also used to store my bike there. They used to do my repairs too. Helps that I worked two mins walk away though. Not sure I'd bother with it now that I'm in Farringdon. You'd need to have them dotted all over the place to make them really useful.

A lot of these 'bike stations' exist already - they're called gyms. If they could facilitate secure bike storage, I think that'd be a really compelling USP to choose one chain over another.
Facilitating staff to be able to cycle to work is not easy. My work has the cycle scheme, 3 showers (between 500 staff) and secure parking for about 30 bikes - and I consider them to be relatively good. They have invested in a carbon audit with the aim of becoming carbon neutral. But it is easier to recommend carbon offsetting by planting trees, or getting a company rickshaw to transport people to meetings (actually suggested and being looked into!) rather than to say that you have to give half a floor over to showering and changing facilities - with the additional cost this would involve.
An ad agency - WCRS - are investing heavily becoming the best company in London for facilitating people who want to cycle to work. But unsurprisingly this is because one of the owners is a very keen cyclist. (He is also a keen skateboarder and was sponsored by Sims back in the day). Most senior management types are the cnuts in chauffer driven gas guzzlers, hence the lack of interest and investment.

City workers aren't renowned for their bikes, their Bugattis maybe not their bikes..
I used to be a gym member in Hawthorn, Melb. $30 per month got me access to the pool and showers.
I don't really want to pay £50-100 here for the same facilities. I'd rather lock to a rail and bitch about the situation constantly :)
