  • Afternoon fellas,

I'm just in the process of thinking up an idea for project for a multimedia type class at uni and I was hoping you lot could let me know what you think of the idea, it's literally just come to me.

Some of the most common questions you hear on forums are, "where can I buy this?" or "where stocks that?" etc. So I was thinking of building a site that has all the possible components (by type, not by make and model - this won't be a phd!) listed and linked from those are all the sites/shops (that I can find) that sell those parts/bits. Maybe including price ranges, whether you can buy online or have to go into the shop, locations, P&P etc etc.

    For example,

You need a new stem, you go to the site, click on stem, select the size, threadless/threaded then you're directed to a page that lists all the shops that sell the type of stem you want. Beside each shop (linked obviously) is their price range and maybe a summary of brands or something.

Like I say, it's still only a vague idea, any feedback would be gratefully received.

    Thanks,

    Aaron

I guess it is made in such a manner because updating prices on a catalogue would involve a lot of administration. looks like it trawls the web for prices.
    Good luck!

  • I think roadbikereview.com and it's sister sites have a similar thing. There are pages of user reviews, and often a button to 'buy this item', although in that case it's probably one of the shops giving revenue to the reviewing site.

    Here's some more feedback :p

  • Well almost all bike shops sell the majority of components, so unless you were breaking it down by manufacturer/model, I don't think you'd end up with anything terribly helpful (except perhaps the more obscure parts).

  • Hmmm, researching existing solutions isn't part of the process I have reached yet. May have to argue the minimilist approach if I want to continue to go down this route.

    Thanks fellas.

  • Make it a site only for fixed / SS bikes - they are really gonna take off in 2008.

  • I suppose it's not a major issue if other sites do a similar thing, as long as I can make some sort of arguement for its existence. It's not for me to make money or anything, just for a little uni project.

5,000 word essay or Make a website

    Easy call I thought.
