Slipping Axle...

  • I am sure I must be being an idiot, but my rear axle keeps slipping. Even on a short 10 minute ride, I can feel the tension leave the chain (Post my now daily tighening) leaving it feeling slack and unresponsive. I bought some new nuts, thinkng the previous ones were dodgy, and cleaned up the axle / dropouts etc but the problem persists!

    Anyone with any thoughs??

  • This gets asked a lot. I think it's because hipsters have skinny arms and fail to tighten the nuts properly. Are you a hipster?

No, seriously, how tight are the nuts? Some nuts don't match some frames well (steel vs. softer alu, etc). You should be hurting your hand clamping these fsckers down with a short(ish) spanner.

No pain, no gain, loose chain.

  • is it loose all the way round (1 rotation of cranks) or is it slack in places and tighter in others? if so, see countless threads about not-completely-round chainrings.

  • Dolan Alu frame - unknown steel (?) nuts

I will try tighening the nuts further, but I really do clamp down with the Wrench when I tighen them up. The nuts were recommended to me by BLB's.

Anyway, thanks Hippy, I shall use the force to tighen my nuts this evening!

  • Tugs. They fix all manner of evil.

  • If it's alu dropouts, sorry, track ends.. check them to make sure they are not all burred up.
If you clamp down super tight, you can squash the metal and create little bumps.
When you move the wheel back later and tighten it, it will sort of work its way into the existing grooves from previous clampings, thereby losing your precious chain tension.

I get a few weeks out of the Twatster (alu) before losing enough chain tension I do something about it. I'm not running a chaintug on it either and I use a Surly Jethro Tule which doesn't give huge amounts of leverage. I do 'em up pretty damn tight though.
