  • Is single speed good on a mountain bike? I hired a bike in the Peak District last weekend and I was constantly changing gears. It was very, very steep though. I suppose if I'l be doing jumps then single speed would be good

I'll check out your wife's bike to get an idea of what I might need.
If anyone knows of anyone selling something similar or something that they think might be suitable (I'm 5'7) then could you let me know?
I guess I'm posting on the wrong forum for this... but I haven't got into/don't know anything about mountain bikes yet which is why I started this on here...
Probably get laughed off mountain bike forums!

  • No sorry Southwest England (whoops)

Yeovil - Somerset to be exact.

    That's miles away!

  • Lets ride there!

  • Here's a pic of my (the wifes) bike!

She has the saddle up though, thats in dirt jump mode for me!!
MTB forums aren't too bad, people moan though if you start a new thread without searching for exsisting ones first (although all forums do!)
I use Southerndownhill.com for my MTB fix, has some young nobbers on there but ain't too bad.

  • I swap and change between fixed, SS and geared mountain biking.
To be honest my favourite set up for general single track and jumping is 9 rear gears and a 38t upfront (running a chain guide).

  • provenrad Lets ride there!

    hehe that would be fun!!

You can catch a good train service from Waterloo direct to Yeovil!

If you can get there, cmwcarn and afan are great in s.wales.

  • Jackass123456789 ...has some young nobbers on there ...

Shh don't tell dogsballs he will be on there like a shot!

I'd back that up, I run a 36t and a 9 speed road cassette on my DH / FR bike which is great for my little legs.

I had a duel ring on my XC bike which was 24 + 36 and 9 at the back which was fine off road but needed a bigger ring on the front for the road (we all have to ride to the off road tracks!!) so now run 24 + 34 + 44

  • Her bike looks nice.
Damn, I really want to go now. I wish I had more money. I think one of my friends might have a bike I could borrow. No good for jumping, but good for a start. They want to wait till the weather improves though...
Might see what they're saying and then maybe we could all go together sometime in the near future

  • @ Jackass, I was always lucky. I grew up in North Yorkshire so, at most, I had 3-4 miles to ride to the start off any offroad route I'd want to do. Now I pretty much have to get the train anywhere I want to ride (Unless I go to epping)

@ Juiliette Make them go now, it's much more fun in the mud. Plus the sooner you get to grips with off road handling the sooner you can start jumping.

  • I'll start working on them!

I should meet up with you some time dude - my parents live in East Coker. Not going down there for a while though.

Tell them to get a grip and come out with you. The weather in England can be crap year round and the likelihood of getting good weather and free time simultaneously is pretty small. Get wet, cold and muddy and the beer at the end of the day feels more worthwhile.

  • caspar has his own Mountain bike holiday company, specialising in taking Londoners out of the capital for whole weekend and day trips.

don't be put off by the title of the site, he does Dartmoor in Devon and also North and South Downs routes.....much nearer London....can provide bikes, helmets etc....too.

I wouldn't worry too much about getting a specific bike for jumping if your starting out, a mountain bike will be fine until you get better. I used one mountain bike for 8 years when I couldn't afford any others and that took me on long road rides/tours, dirt jumping, street riding, cross country mountain biking and down downhill world cup race tracks (slowly) in the Alps and US. The day that bike snapped I felt like someone had died.

Now I do have a selection of bikes but do feel especially in mountain biking people don't believe you can do something on a bike unless you have the specific one for the job.

  • Momentum : Those video links you posted about bunny hopping don't work. Or at least, not on my computer...
And yes, you are right, the sooner we start going, the better!

Did you right click and save them? Don't think they work otherwise. They quite helpful cos they break it down into several steps, but you can find the same info if you google "how to bunnyhop" or something

And yes, you are right, the sooner we start going, the better!

See you at Clapham Junction tomorrow then... ;)

  • Ahhh.. good old youtube!

JuliettySpag hopefully some more numbers next time - I should re-revive the other thread perhaps?
You're lucky that MTB is out of fashion - could pick up a deal like Tommy did! Gumtree?

  • yeah, i did try right clicking. Wierd...
Would love to come tomorrow but I'm going snowboarding for a week. I guess that is why have no money for a bike.
Yeah, maybe you should revive the other thread.
If you're going regularly, and if I can borrow a bike, maybe we could all go in a couple of weeks or so

  • When my DMR is fully rebuilt and I can come along :]
