Riding the bike with the bolts out sounds like a wonderful way to round out the socket and ensure that they're unusable.
When you put the BB cups back in (after you've got the crank off of course), grease them up with something gloopy. I got something from my local bike shop that looks like hair wax, forget what it's called. If you've greased the threads up well with that stuff the cups will stop coming out.
