Dreamhost - We host the Brick Lane Bikes site on their.... It's sometimes slow, but overall very stable and reasonable. Also, if you buy your domain from 123-reg.co.uk (good) or prime hosting (good), you can get pretty decent deals with their own hosting for simple beginner stuff.

another happy dreamhost user here.

i use one.com, no downtime yet after 3 years, and always decent speeds. Might not be the best for a site with heavy traffic and a lot of php/sql etc on it, but for a simple site it´s great, and cheap

I have used 34sp to host quite a bit off stuff. They are a small company with very reliable support based in manchester.

bluehost.com - cheaper domain registration than most UK companies seem to offer and hosting is generally cheaper too.
Second what chriscrash says tho - wordpress is awesome and you don't need to know much to get a slick looking site up - i've used both for a few years with no probss.
Avoid Fasthosts at all costs - right muppets
