Object I swap and change between fixed, SS and geared mountain biking.
To be honest my favourite set up for general single track and jumping is 9 rear gears and a 38t upfront (running a chain guide).
I'd back that up, I run a 36t and a 9 speed road cassette on my DH / FR bike which is great for my little legs.
I had a duel ring on my XC bike which was 24 + 36 and 9 at the back which was fine off road but needed a bigger ring on the front for the road (we all have to ride to the off road tracks!!) so now run 24 + 34 + 44
