I know a few things MTBing! If you need to know anything ask away!
I took part in one of, if not the most extreme DH races in the world last year, the mega avalanche in Alp d'heuz!
Nothing like starting on top of a snow covered mountain knowing you've got an hour and a half of downhill (well 80% dh and 20% flat/uphill) with 200 other riders around you doing the same crazy shizzle.
I'm located in the south west so if anyone is in my neck of the woods give me a shout and I can take you on gentle to extreme rides if you want.
You can get some great women specific MTBs now for around £400 with disc brakes and good components. My wife rides my single speed jump bike (Commencal cro-mo) and she loves it, small frame and real simple. She did a 15 mile route on it no problems over Christmas.
