ain't they also hugely long though?

how big's your head tube? you could always choppy chop choppy and get a shorter bolt.
-

BLB usually have a reasonable selection of quills knocking around.
Might be worth a regular hassle… -

I guess..seems a bit of a mission on a box-fresh stem tho!
I actually do have it quite high, not rammed as is the fashion.
but 195mm would go 3/4 of the way down me steerer..
hmmmmm.....

RPM, i am currently using a quill adaptor. the ITM one. had current one for about a year and it is stiff as, no problems. used one before that on another ride for about a year too. once again, no problem. they are no faff at all to use and obviously open up a wider variety of stems.
on the downside, perhaps quill stems look nicer. and ross at brixton cycles told me about some problems he had with one once, ripping the whole thing out of the head tube when pulling away fast. ... like I say, i've had no problems and have put them under some serious strain.

thanks jonny, that's a great help.
how heavy is the adaptor, do you think that an adaptor+standard stem is heavier than just a quill stem?
also, how do you space them? as I mentioned I have my bars fairly high, can you use standard stem stackers below it?

The Profile has a longish rise and benefits from being front-loading too.

Much as hate to put business his way, Barrie Witcomb usually has a selection of new/NOS quills.

if you want to try the nitto, give us a shout. live very far north but will be drinking at the foundry 2moro eve and will be on the bike.

i don't think there is much in it weight wise, but then i never worry about such things. i had my adaptor out the other day when experimenting with a different stem. the thing i noted is that is pretty short. that is, it doesn't disappear into the head tube all that far (which suits me as i have an old quill bolt stuck in mine - another story).
i don't use any spacers, just screwed mine down on to the stem and straight on to top of headset. never had any problems. i imagine standard spacers will work since you have your bars fairly high - but like i say I am not sure about this. note the adaptors come in 1" and 1"1/8 depending on what stem you want to use (the old Cinelli Alter stems for example are for 1").
i ain't got any scales at home a la Tynan but can do a crude compare with a stock 110 ITM quill I have lying around at home if you like. at work at the mo mind.

cheers, don't worry about weighing it! I really don't care that much, just wondered that's all.
the stem I have in there at the moment is an ITM thing I got for £5 and it's heavier than the whole bike and flexes like rhubarb

i'm using my adaptor with a seriously stubby OS downhill stem so not much chance of any flex. might feel different i guess if riding with a longer stem, higher bar set up. hope you get it sorted one way or another.

Score!

I've got a couple of 90s kicking about at home. I know they're too long, but if you're still interested I can check their bar diameter tomorrow night when I'm back at mine…
-
• #25
that would be very kind
can any of you massive homo-sapiens recommend a decent quill stem to take 26mm bars?
I'm finding it hard to get anything in 80mm reach of that clamp diameter.
failing that, who's used those quill adaptors? are they any stiffer than a quill stem, or just a faff?
