Rear wheel for 126mm drop outs

Posted on
  • I've been checking out the bikes on here for a while but decided to post a question about rear wheels. I am converting a road bike with a 126mm drop outs. What are the rear wheel options - are there any off the peg wheels I could get at a reasonable price or do I have to build one because it's a road bike?

  • but what do you really want?

    ask yourself that.

  • most track hubs are 120mm. Most can be spaced to 126mm if you wang a few washers in there baby.

  • RPM but what do you really want?

    ask yourself that.

world peace, all peoples to get along in harmony, a scaletrix, a shoot annual, an Arsenal home kit with 'Henry, the man, the legend' on the back, and an arrospok!!!!!

  • coldset the frame in.

ask cajeta how to do this, basically you need a fuck-off big bit of work and some force. and some string if piffling things like alignment bother you.

  • sounds drastic, plus I think the frame's been bashed around a bit, don't want to weaken it too much. I'll try the track wheel route, if it's not too expensive and I can get the chain alignment right.

  • Just put a washer on each side and squeezy-squeezy.
    Works for me.

  • ...or stick a 130mm hub in and stretchy-stretchy. Works for me too.
Wouldn't get into bending a nice piece of old steel unless absolutely unavoidable (it's not).

  • If you're not varying the sapcing at the back by much, you don't need to cold set it. You can just bend the forks out by hand when you squeeze the hub in, it won't cause any lasting damage. I ran a 126mm frame with a 130mm hub for ages, no worries.

That said, it makes changing the tyre a bit more of a nuisance, so I'd still go down the re-spaced 120mm hub route.

  • Cheers, so I'm just looking now for a 120mm rear track wheel for clincher tires. I don't imagine they make them with flip flop hubs though.

    Hi
    all good advice above.
If you wan cheap 126 (les van fiddy dorra!) get sjs 'track' hubs, they're 126mm, single/fixed flipflops. EDIT
    http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/product-SJSC-SJSC-Double-Fixed-Large-Flange-Track-Hubs-with-high-quality-sealed-cartridge-bearings--Polished-Alloy-finish--per-pair-36-hole-11137.htm they're only £40 the pair.
I reckon sjs could build an alright wheel pretty cheeep with those on for ya (phone em), someone here even cheeper if you got those hubs.

  • Oh yes they do! You wan' buy offa-da-peg? Me suggest evryone cxp22 rims and whatever hubs.

[EDIT] - BEaten to it! One day we will all be running the same value-for-money components... :-(

  • that's true. the sjs hubs space out easy with washers (well most do cept goldtecs)

but squeezing down's not normally a problem

  • sjs will sell those hubs laced to open sports for £140 pair inc delivery.

  • you could also get CPX22s for the same price, nicer than open sports IME

  • sjs do a Sovus flip-flop hub too for only £15 but it's 110mm, so you'd need to get it respaced. They will do that for you for another fiver. Add another fiver for postage. I would also favour a CXP22 over an Open Sport and they are much the same price. It's not the best hub in the world but will certainly get you started and you can upgrade at a later date when you've had a chance to see what's around.

  • don't think sjs do cxp22 though

  • Also can't get cxp22s 36 hole in silver - I've only found black ones in 36H (if it makes a difference for you)

  • thanks, sjs could be the way to go. I'll give them a call. I think I only need a rear as the front might just need new bearings, and it's a reasonably good condition Ambrosio.

sjs hubs only sell in pairs. Guess you could flog the front one.

  • actually, sjs do have cxp22, Silver £21.99, Black £24.19, 36 hole.
