you actually stripped the thread, or rounded off the allen hole???
-
• #3
Probably the crank not the bolt as it's alu don't you think?
Might have to tap it out.
:(
-
• #4
nah cant be the crank, because chain ring bolts screw into the back bit of the bolt not into the crank. its not the allen hole, thats fine. Bolt has loosened a bit but now is just spinning and is still quite a bit into the back bit of the bolt
-
• #5
can you get pliers to grip the back of the bolt?
-
• #6
Drill.(unless it is one of those Miche screw-down cranks, then you're fucked)
-
• #7
can hold the back of the bolt, but its the thread inside, cos i can turn using an alley key, then back wont move, but the bolt will still turn :(
-
• #8
All right did it with a hammer and screwdriver.
Thanks for advice :)
-
• #9
If the threading's gone shouldn't it be able to just pull out? Pliers on fron and back if there's room...or if not glue the alan key to the bolt and use pliers on the back?
Sounds typical of my luck with cranks!

runcible rakan All right did it with a hammer and screwdriver.

Ignore ^^^^^^
Sweet! You don't know how to get a crank arm off when the threading which the crank puller attaches to has gone do ya?
Aaargh!

Todd You don't know how to get a crank arm off when the threading which the crank puller attaches to has gone do ya?
Hammer to the back of the arm?!!?
-
• #15
and a screw driver to wiggle it off!!
-
• #16
Might come to that!
Right came off easily.
Left hates me! ha ha.
And now theres no thread! Damn! -
• #17
If that don't work the whole axle is getting sawn off! Not in the mood to be clever ;-)
-
• #18
a bearing puller could also work....ain't got one tho.
-
• #19
those little chain ring bolt spanners - is it just me or do other people think they are crap? took receipt of my new chainring yesterday and reckon i will just be using a big flat head spanner instead.
-
• #20
you don't really need one, never used one befor, as long as you hold your finger on the back, screw it on fairly tight take your finger away then quickly whip it tighter, generally does the trick, and threadlock-it.
-
• #21
31t®um you actually stripped the thread, or rounded off the allen hole???
hypothetically, what would you do if the allen hole WERE rounded off?? purely hypothetically of course.
also, hypothetically, i can't grip the bolt with pliers. is it drill time??
-
• #22
is threadlocking it a good idea? any problems when you come to wanting to change the chainring again?
-
• #23
jonny some have the bolt coming through, so you need the prongs (campag singles anyway).
-
• #24
Totally agree though Jonny, they are shite!
I find it easier to whip the whole crank off then use the tool, saves the skin on your hands.
-
• #25
dogs, mine are campag singles it's just i think the tool is crap.
sam, might do what you suggest actually and pull the whole crank off. might make the job easier in the long run even if it turns it from a 10 min job to a half hour.
Which means I cant get the chain ring off the cranks.... any ideas?
