Shit, that's tragic - could have been any one of us... :-(

Tragic. How many is that now? Was just on BBC news... but this is from some newsgroup:
"One of Britain’s leading cyclists was killed today while out training near his home in Fort William. Jason MacIntyre, a three-time British champion and Scottish record holder, was training on the A82 road when he was hit by a vehicle, said to be a council vehicle which overtook him and then turned into his path. The 34-year old was airlifted from the scene but died on his way to hospital in Glasgow"

horrific.
and presumably the driver of the council vehicle will receive counselling and a nice cup of tea to make sure he's not too traumatised.

that is sad news. very sad. thoughts to his wife and kids.

That just makes me so angry... 'he was hit by a vehicle, said to be a council vehicle which overtook him and then turned into his path'..... so he saw him, overtook him then just decided to take a chance (in a 5 tonne vehicle no doubt) and see if he could get away with it?! Shocking news.

Yes. as I say, that driver deserves a good strong cuppa. Poor chap. must have been awful for him.

nimhbus Yes. as I say, that driver deserves a good strong cuppa. Poor chap. must have been awful for him.
To be fair - it probably was. Just 'cos somebody's a shit or thoughtless driver it doesn't mean that they are automatically oblivious to uncaring about the consequences of their actions.
I know if I, through my own negligence, say, injured an old lady on a pedestrian crossing, I would be ashamed and mortified. Broken bones and old age are not a good combination.

R.I.P Jason.
It would be nice if this thread could stay on thread to send thoughts to Jason and his family rather than a Daily Mailesque knee jerk all drivers are cunts thread.

Yes, of course. I was parodying the response of the authorities in terms of not prosecuting him, not the driver's actual reaction.

a. i didn't say drivers are cunts, i said that the authorities are cunts as they will doubtless let the driver off.
b. the thread is to discuss the tragic accident, not just to send 'thoughts'.

Sorry if I wasn't clear in my meaning nimhbus, I didn't mean don't discuss the topic.
Just having met Jason through someone I know on the Scotish track team and understanding what it is like to loose close friends through bad diving/bad conditions it would kinda be nice not to resort to the willy waving "that driver desearves a strong cuppa" line.
But by all means do as you please. -

Thoughts for him and his family.
Every horrific time this happens I go through the same old process of 'should i be doing this every day??' and I always carry one coz its the only possible option. I'm sure Jason would have had similar thoughts. I tell my family every so often that if I don't return from a ride, they must remember it was something I chose to do, thoroughly enjoyed and wouldn't have missed a moment of.
Just go easy out there everyone. -
