  • First, a short tale...

Riding my usual commute today I got a toot from a driver, his passsenger was giving all sorts of angry looking arm gestures. I thought to avoid eye contact having just nudged in front of them coming through a junction. This guy had however given me loads of room on the road so made me think. A casual glance back at the rear of the bike and I noticed my trusty rear light had parted company.
I returned sheepishly to the junction just in time to see my light get catapulted off the road as it was driven over.

Bad start to the day you may think, so did I. On closer inspection, despite a couple of scrapes the light had kept its shape and still functioned perfectly. At this point I gave a light chuckle and pondered how lucky the light had been. 12 years old and the cat-eye still had some car-defiance left in its plastic shell.

Later this evening I suffered a puncture, downcast I duly replaced the rear tube only to get back on the bike and find the front flat too. Anyway, finally got this one repaired too (in the warm lobby of a nearby sainsbury's).

That's 4 punctures in a week, and 5 since the start of the year! If I was superstitious (and I'm not), I'd be wondering where it had all gone wrong. (EDIT: another 2 punctures this morning takes it to 6 in a week. Can anyone beat that?)
Did my luck points for the day all get used up with the light incident?

    Now then,
What are your cycling related superstitions, lucky charms, or rituals?
