  • I notice that the majority of bikes, conversations, pics on here appear to be about 700c bikes.
Now I understand that I may be viewed as a little "strange" but I'm into 26", mountain bike, based single speeders.

    Am I alone?

    Toodle pip

  • i ride ss off-road, used to ride it on road too and had a ' dinglespeed' 2 cogs and 2 chainrings, just moved the chain over when i put slicks on.

"i think being a london based forum...most people rarely get a chance to get near mountain bike terrain"
i try and ride mtb nearly every weekend only a 35min train ride away from dorking station and the surrey hills which has some of the best trails in the south east (probably the best, better than swinley, epping and the south downs. you probably have to go as far as the quantock's to get better riding.

  • road bikes are really good on the road.

far too many people (and I'll admit to being one, once upon a time) ride MTBs on the road, with slicks it's a compromise. yes they work, but nothing beats a properly sized road bike with 700c for really getting in the miles.

everything about mountain bikes sucks ass in traffic, the q factor is massive, the centre of gravity is too high, the handlebars are gay and the angles too slack.

you can bellyache and disagree with me till you're blue in the face, but deep down..you know I'm right.

  • scott gon be broke ah,but you're dedicated smithy....:)

    unfortunately not that dedicated.
pre december i was riding a fair bit, reasonably fit then flu, the weather, work and christmas got in the way. looking forward to getting fitter again though. and more importantly riding more!

  • and here's my 24" wheeled SS jump bike.

  • Ok, I'm not alone.
Although I don't know what handlebars have to do to qualify as "gay".
Be painted in orange and green stripes maybe?

    Nah they would need these....

    rainbow stripes.

or be overly wide with a large backsweep.

  • I just sized up some 700c wheels against my old 1995 mtb and apart from axle spacing on the rear the fit looks good. There's even a hole in the fork that would take a short drop front caliper, even though it has only ever had cantis/v's on.

Has anyone else tried a setup like this?

  • A shop in Melb where I bought my rigid mtb forks from had setup 700C on an mtb frame using disc brakes. Kinda like a DIY (insert name of that rat bike here) thing.

  • MrSmith "i think being a london based forum...most people rarely get a chance to get near mountain bike terrain"

Tis true, Tis true i tell thee.

It's the only reason i sold most of my bikes. Lack of storage in my flat plus no real opportunity to ride them. I had a surly 1x1 which was great but i barely used it, it sat alongside an Orange Patriot which has also gone now. Still have a mountain bike though so one day i'll explore this place MrSmith calls "Dorking".

    I'm scared of the south.

Yep, my first fixed was my raleigh mountain bike of that age, I chopped out the rear drop outs and fitted track ends bringing the rear down to 120mm spacing. 700c wheels with 28mm tyres went straight in

It's great round them there Surrey Hills :)

  • looks like BKB near peaslake to me, or over on pitch hill?

  • Bleeding nora, that looks like it could be pretty fast.

I know Epping Forest like the back of my hand now, it's deffo time to get some riding in elsewhere.
Time for a day trip south of the river me-thinks. Maybe not fixed though, dare i mention gears.
