dogs, i like bermondsey. even spent New Years Eve there. the area has definitely 'come up' quite a bit in the last few years, as evidenced by a few nice places to eat and drink (The Rose, The Garrison, The Woolpack) and a few interesting shops and stuff. like most areas of london it still has it's fair share of rundown flats and the like.
i am likely to be on the move in a couple of months and if it wasn't for the fact that bermondsey is too close to central london (thus depriving me of miles on the bike) it would be on the list. i am hankering after a move back to the east end.

I wouldn't.
Despite being from Tooting originally, I can think of no good reason to cross the Thames.

tommy, you have reminded me of one of my favourite quotes from the film Saw.
'i don't know how i got here. i fell asleep in my shithole apartment to just wake up in an actual shithole"

old kent road is still a bit of a hole but Bermondsey is further towards the river really.
Quite posh in areas and also quite run down in others.. Depends where you go.

er...... SE1 is a huge post code and varies massively.
I would suggest he be very careful about living by Old Kent Road (you will see it is by far the cheapes part of SE1/SE16 area.... and for a reason)
I lived in Borough(SE1) and Bermondsey (SE16 Jamaica Road) both great locations but again like most parts of London a few hundred metres in any direction can make a difference.
The closer to London Bridge /Tower Bridge the better but also more expensive.Tower bridge road is ok and one end hits the old Kent Road roundabout. So really it depends where on Old Kent Road.
It really is a jackpot around there and you have to go see lots of places.
Long Lane is really up and coming. All the little roads off there are nice and there are still some good rent deals around. Also Im guessing if you cycle everywhere and dont need to walk late at night its not so bad.
Get him to sign up to http://www.spareroom.co.uk. Place a wanted ad and check out the ads on there. you can look for rooms to let, or you can buddie up with others on the site and find a whole flat to rent between you.
happy house/flat hunting!

db,
i used to live behind Tesco's on Old Kent road and work in the Garrison on Bermondsey st. As mentioned the two areas are massively different. Bermondsey st is nice and has been hugely gentrified over the last decade or so, and I'm sure the prices reflect that. Old kent is 'a touch' further behind, I'm sure they're throwing loads'a money at it, but 3/4 years ago it wasn't all that pretty...I'd just get whoevers thinking of moving there, to go spend some time in the area at different times, to get a proper feel for it.

hah, was working just up the road last year..
it's ok, but too bleak for my tastes.
there are plenty of amenities on the OKR, but the localised areas along rolls road and around there a bit...bare..
TBH I reckon back towards burgess park is a better bet, or further nort up twards the river

My mate used to live there and liked it. Could walk to Borough Market for his weekly shop kinda thing. I don't know the area coz I never visited the cnut.

i've lived in borough for 11 years and I really like it, and in many respects it's got a lot better, tho no thanks to the relentless throwing up of ugly luxury developments for knobheads who bring nothing to the area etc etc
we're off long lane but it does tend to feel a bit bleaker once you go east of tower bridge road
this is handy and the forum is comical in an ironic kind of way... http://www.london-se1.co.uk/ -

eeehhhh ads - cool web site, ta for posting. very useful as I'm looking about now for where friends and I want to move out of halls to.
Ta, if you are looking for places to live, use the NEstoria tab to add Houses for sale or rent over the top. You just have to know what postcode district you want to live in (e.g. NW6 etc).

cool, ta. Mostly west london postcodes so it shouldn't be too difficult to narrow it down. East London naaaaah thanks! :P
hey peeps,
a friend is thinking about moving to a place behind old kent rd in bermondsey, SE1. I know it used to be a real hole of a place, but keep on hearing it's changing (ie like east london). The flat is pretty nice by the sound of it, but he's got no clue on the area, he currently lives in pimlico/manchester.
good or bad points
