as far as i am aware, you have to give them a name and an address where you are known by that name. doesn't have to be your real name, and you don't have to have id. but if they don't believe you, they can hold you until they have verified it in some way. that may be by checking the electoral register, or by ringing up a phone number at that address, or by sending a police car around to check.
