Can I ask a dumbass question :

When I pedal my eggbeaters, I can feel + hear my cleats making a 'crunching' sound.

What's going on?

could be the bearings, :(
not expensive to replace, and you can do it yourself.

Could be pitting on the cleats, grit lodged in the gap between cleat and sole or on the pedal bars/springs. Give everything a quick going over with a rag and a bit of GT-85 (although I always find it feels too floaty the first few days after doing that).

Or it's your knees.

to get really hard sprockets off i put the chainwhip on, then rest it on a door frame, sit on the ground and using my legs pull back on the wheel ;) . tight lockrings, just get a big screwdriver and bash it with a hammer :)
