  • dumbass question:

i just changed my 16t on the back to a 17t. i put the new one on, fairly good and tight, bodged it slightly with a 3/32 chainwhip. i then put the lockring on TIGHT with my new hazar or whatever it's called. it' staken me this long to get hold of one that it's the first time i've needed or wanted to change a rear sprocket. i changed SS before, but that's hand tight.

i rode out, feels good and all, but on two occasions, once when i did a skid, another when starting off, i felt some noticeable give.

is this common as it sort of beds in, or have i got to take it off and put it back on much tighter? there wasn't any give.

  • i normally do it this way:

    1. rotafix cog - not to avoid using the lockring, but to get the most out of the lockring threads
    2. really really do get the lockring on FINGER TIGHT. try a little bit harder. you'll actually be able to get more out of it.
    3. go out and skid. normally it doesn't slip. but if it's only a little, that means the cog and lockring are settled. should be fine by then.
  • Well even if the lock ring is on insanely tight, the cog could still clip counter-clockwise if it isn't threaded on properly. I'd recommend you rotafix it on, works a treat.

    bodged it slightly

do you mean you put it on wrong...?

  • no, i didn't, i used a 3/32 chainwhip instead of a 1/8 to get it tight.

thanks ed, that's kind of the response i was hoping for.

  • sounds like the cog wasn't on hard/fully enough, then the lock-ring was done up tight,
forwards pressure has kicked the cog on further, and when back pedaling/skidding its going up against the lock ring, stamp hard on the pedals, remove wheel, then re-tighten the lock-ring.

  • ahhhhhh.

    will do that. tomorrow.

  • i had that a while ago, just rotafix it really hard untill you think that the chain will snap, or somthing like that.

  • with rotafix, what happens when you want to get the sprocket off?

  • Yeah, what 31t®um says

Best way to put on a cog is to tighten the fuck out of it initially
    same with the lock ring
ride up up some steep hills(careful on the descent mind), or hammer it on the flat someplace safe
return to workshop or where the tools at
    tighten lockring again
    presto

  • or bring th lockring tool with you, slam on the pedals, slow to a stop with out skiping or skiding, and tighten it on the spot.

  • ok i take the tool to work tomorrow. do it in the morning, then teach the kids with oily hands.

  • Do all the kids have oily hands?

  • Racket sports with that lot could be dangerous...

    ...I'll get my coat

  • Not all of them, but PJ will only teach the oily-handed. He ignores the others, or makes scathing, yet witty comments at them

    :p

  • don't ever let them play polo, damn mallet chuckers ;P

  • Last wknd I broke my dura ace chain whip trying to release my 17t cog to change to a 19t to help save my knees... its fookin welded on... anyone had this problem & know how to get it off... I was at complete breaking point pushing with all my weight and it wouldn't give . I was pushing the right way I think;-]

  • another one of those dura ace chain whips bites the dust...

rotafix it. the good way to get a cog on and off.

oh and don't even ask me (no pun intended) how to get it off!

  • go some place long flat and empty, ride like hell, then throw the hardest skid of your life, with out the lock ring on. you might want to wear a helmet.

  • yeah = the lockring came off on the 16t, but not the sprocket. i felt something click/crunch in my shoulder though.

  • vegansdontneedgears go some place long flat and empty, ride like hell, then throw the hardest skid of your life, with out the lock ring on. you might want to wear a helmet.

Strangly looking forward to this, Haverstock runway it is

  • Tighten, do your best Chris Hoy standing start, don't skid, stop, tighten lockring like Arnie would.

  • pj i rode out, feels good and all, but on two occasions, once when i did a skid, another when starting off, i felt some noticeable give.

Are you sure the give is not something non-cog related like the slack in your chain or your BB ?

    hahaha!! lmao
