Just my way of smashing the state;) Or if you don't have the washers the correct size clearly but I like to think about squishing the head of state.

I'm almost tempted to refit those cranks and BB, just so I can have a go at removing them with 5 penny pieces.

CHUG_IT just use a long socket bit and tap it in with a hammer to the required depth
Nice one this was the answer i was looking for!
This may be a stupid question but had all my bit taken of my bike on the weekend and have been replacing with new parts. I noticed my origional nut was sitting flush on the top of the steerer tubeand was damaged was damaged and i managed to get it out.Having a feel around with my finger in the tube it seems that it was origionally about located around 15mm down....would that sound about right?
Cheers

Lidl on Acre Lane (Brixton) has a whole heap of tools in stock next week - from thursday (and no, before you ask, I don't work on the counter). Obv, not going to be the best quality but they are cheap... screwdrivers, socket sets, allen key sets, pliers and the bike mechanic's friend - massive hammers etc.

I think I may do - we were installing one yesterday at lunchtime. I'm in Farringdon, but I'm not in tomorrow.
We're putting together a work bike out of all our spare parts, we can use it to pop down to the shops or meetings without worrying about it getting nicked. That's why we have a lot of tools lying around at the moment.

Thanks all, think i've got it sussed but cheers for the offers!!!! :-)
I used the normal crank remover you mention with 3 random washers between it and the cranks. It will bend the washers but gets the cranks off beautifully.
Good for a quick fix.
