Vouchers of cycloscopic death

  • Its that time of year again......

My cycle to work scheme vouchers become available again. I have thrashed my Flyer until it's ball bags are whimpering. But it has done me proud (apart from brakes and wheels).

Am i truely perverse to fancy this as my next commuting steed ? Or should I just take the Surly.

  • disc brakes for commuting, you gotta be joking

  • shitty death, that's the ugliest bike i have ever seen.

  • i think it hit a few branches

  • Easy now, It was just athought. I would lose the gears but keep the discs

There is something about the life saving crispness of discs that appeals massively

Like going ass over teakettle into the curb when you slam on your front lever?

  • But also avoid my ass from Datsun driving Khat munching physco cab driver.

Calipers just dont seem to cut it in the wet anymore

  • really? they don't?

shit, better get rid of that 105 'post haste'.

  • Datsuns? Where do you live?

That Trek does look like they ticked every box on the spec sheet.. MTB, CROSS, COMMUTER, ROAD and got the mutant result at the end..

You need to clean your brakes Eddie. Try new pads and scrub your rims. New cables too.

  • I live south of the river Hippy its a Jungle out there, They dont all drive Maybachs like the noble hamlet of Hammersmith !

It does tick many boxes and I know it's * certainly* not cool. But I dont give a monkeys about that

  • disks are pointless really when the contact patch of a 23c is so small caliper brakes can easily initiate a skid with normal road tyres.

  • shit, are they 23mm tyres? then yeah, discs are kinda pointless. i thought they were 28's or something.

as long as you 'know' your brake, you won't flip over the bars (unless a kid runs in front of you, or something)

  • Yeah, they are useless. I tried the whole disc + 23c tyre thing, it isn't worth it. Normal callipers are fine.

Edit: it doesn't look that bad... just an average road/commuter hybrid thing.

Seems like the consensus here is yes...

I agree that discs don't make much sense with skinny tyres. Get some koolstop pads for your genesis and you'll be fine

  • hippy New cables too.

That can make a huge difference. Was last thing I changed but should definitely have been the first.

I don't live in Hammersmith. It's all BMW X5's and Porsches out here anyway, Maybachs are just too big :)

No, the reason I asked is that I didn't think/know the UK had Datsuns. They're such a 1970's Aussie car.. everyone had one. I wondered if you were local.

Another piece of advice that I'm ignoring myself :) My roadie DESPERATELY needs new cables and yet I ignore it.. hahaha I'm too lazy for this shirt, too lazy for this shirt, it hurts..

  • Yours aren't the only cables that need some attention:

" How long will the present Forth Road Bridge survive? - Update

Following investigations in 2005, it was thought that the present bridge might have to be closed to lorries by 2013 and to all other traffic by 2019, as a result of "irreversible corrosion" in the main cables.

However, following a more detailed study it is now believed that if a solution to the corrosion cannot be found, the bridge may have to be closed to lorries at some time between 2013 and 2018 and to all other traffic at some time between 2019 and 2024."

    Phew, that's all right then...

  • Eddie, for that money you can already buy a decent Condor Italia with a good basic groupset. Been riding the Italia for a couple of years now as my Road Commuter bike and its a very decend bike. Never had a problem with it. Far better than the Evans mutant.
