  • And there's a section in 1984 where people discuss the relative 'luckiness' of numbers which now also appears to happen in real life (on the tv programme when I'm unlucky enough to catch it, and on tinterweb). However, Lottery distributors have put billions of pounds into the voluntary sector and into sport / art / science over the last decade, money that wouldn't have been contributed by the State, nor by individual donation.

    However its not all good, the current nu-labour manifestation is blurring the lines between what should be paid for via tax and what should be additional to that. I won't even start on the olympics*. So all in all, yes, teh operating quangos need to be more removed from govt strategy...

    • nor the amount of 'sporting for excellence' funded atheletes I've met who *dont' *seem that excellent.
