  • im looking to build a tall bike in time for end of spring start of summer to take to critical mass and stuff. does anyone have a tig welder or any knowledge about building one? anything would be appreciated.

  • if you dont have a tig welder then could anyone point me in the direction of one? i have used one before to make a bike trailer, but that was at my old school which i am no longer at.

  • i tried to get people interrested a bit back, see the thread 'mutant bikes'
nothing has come of it yet but i really want to make some more mutant bikes, deff a tall bike

some friends at rampART squat/social center are going to be biulding one so that might be worth checking out

  • Not very helpful, but quite enjoyable:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H61bbDRdGQw

    a short documentary on tallbikes.

  • rampART has been given their eviction notice, they lost in court last week and are going t be kicked out in a few weeks, maybe a month or two. its such a shame really because what they are going to build there, luxury flats are going to be too expensive for those who really need the housing around there, whereas ramparts was available and open to all.
i was thinking of going down to 56a in camberwell, but i dont want to take all their parts just to make one bike. oh well ill see what i can find on the net and stuff. when i do get all the parts and possibly a tig welder then ill let you know smeear.

  • kam, thanks for posting it p here, i just watched it after going on fgg, its really quite helpful compared to other stuff abut tall bikes on the net.

  • my brother is building a tall bike at the mo for his degree project. got the frames from ox cycle workshop. whisper me your details and i will email you some pics etc.

  • my friend back home just built this:

i'm sure he'd be happy to help with any questions, or ideas of where to go for more info. in fact, there are probably already links somewhere on the blog

  • i should be back in a few months, with tig welding supplies, and jigs, and anything else you need to build a bike out of metal. i have built tall bike before.. kinda have to see what you got before you can figure out how to work with it.

  • p.s. can any one say tall bike jousting?

  • sounds good chris, ill get collecting parts for when you come back, if thats okay, and yes i can say and want to try out tall bike jousting.

  • its totaly ok... and i need more scars so we should all start jousting

  • vegansdontneedgears p.s. can any one say tall bike jousting?

  • Tall tour

    You might find this interesting....

  • thanks pltini, i saw somthing about that a while ago, there bikes seem a bit too complicated for me but the ones they ride in the other pictures seem to be the sort of thing to base the bike around.

  • have you seen/heard of these guys? boston based chopper/mutant bike group. lots of fun.

    scul website here

  • I love that bike. Doesnt he go to MIT or something though. SCUL rock. The other people Id check out are Chunk:

( Ijust came across this old picture of a tall bike on their site..)

I think Will told me the tall bike tour bikes were built by Rat Patrol. They were deliberately longer for hill climbing, load carrying and general out of town touring.

Ive been wanting to build a tall bike for awhile. And a new chopper. I just havent had the time/space. However, my new place is temptingly right next to victoria park for test rides, so it might have to be my next project. Tall bike jousting it is...

  • Check out the film B.I.K.E. which is about Black Label Bike Club and tall bike jousting in Brooklyn and New York City. You won't learn anything about building tall bikes but it's still really good.

nope, mars doesn't go to/never went to mit, though he does work there in some capacity. his other chopper is even better. a karate monkey frame with 8 or 9 foot long forks and a set of speakers on them, in awesome homemade boxes. good lighting effects too. soo good.

  • the Rat Patrol are where its at

  • reminds me of time my mate parked his civic under the truck of this jock at my high school...

  • vegansdontneedgears reminds me of time my mate parked his civic under the truck of this jock at my high school...

i thought that only happened in films like back to the future.

  • i think the civic is only undamaged in films... but as long as it was my mates car it was worth it.

  • yes, they look ridiculous
