Wanted: Old stuff for first fixed please

Posted on
  • Hey, I am converting an old a raleigh ten-speed (see pic) into a fixed gear, but dont have any of the parts. It would be great if any of you have any old parts laying around that you could sell to me for low low prices :) I am building it so I can have a beater to lock up around town without having to worry about it getting nicked. Here is the list of parts that I need, thanks a bunch in advance, Rob.

    Chainset
    Rear wheel
Brake levers (road bike stylee, the existing ones have those annoying secondary brakes)
    Bottem Bracket
    Long seatpost (254 mm)

  • i've got some road bike brake levers... a few options for you to choose... whisper me for details.

  • why change bottom bracket?

rear wheel is always the main expense...

  • It doesnt spin smoothly, maybe I just need to lube it up a bit.

  • Got these brakes..
    Brakes

  • strip it down and clean it, regrease. should be ok. saves money.

  • £$£

  • Maybe about £50 for the wheel, and as cheap as possible for the others.

  • £50? where from? second hand maybe, but second hand fixed rear wheel is rare as rocking horse shit.

  • Is it? How much I need to spend?

  • i spent £90 on my rear wheel. that was all parts and build

  • Wow, I think I need to get a job! I thought I could do the whole thing for like £70 (but I am an eejit). Where is the best place to get it from?

  • definitely speak to Peter at Outspoken Cycles in Cambridge (http://www.outspokencycles.co.uk) for wheels etc. Really great service and even better prices. I got my CXP22 rims on Formula hubs for 100 squid. delivery £10. no, i don't work there.

  • Your front rim looks like it's alloy (Mavic?) and as long as the breaking surface is okay, just use that.
Buy a set of track hubs from SJS cycles £40, and one rim (my cheapish rims are Mavic Open sport, SJS have these for around £18).
A reasonable set of spokes will for less than a tenner, plus an appropriate sized spocket for another tenner.

Your existing brakes should be okay if you dismantle and remove the auxillary levers
You should be on the road for less than £80.

  • Thanks! What should I do about the chainset? edit: in fact I dont think it needs to be changed, might buy a new gear though.

  • take off one chainring, check size left, is prob 52, change front or put big number on back.
change chain to 1/8, will work with 3/32 on front and 1/8 on back. is not ideal but is cheapo for now.

  • btw: measure spacing of rear dropouts before you buy wheel/hub.

you prob thought of this already, but just in case.

otherwise you will end up with 120m wheel and 126 or 130 spacing. if you're lucky it will be 120.

  • Oh, forgot to mention - get some toe clips, cheap but pretty much essential for fixed unless you keep both brakes.

  • i'd say EVEN if you keep both brakes.

  • Wicked, thanks for all your help

yep, perfectly doable, but you'll have to have the tools and skills to build the wheel - which is actually fun to learn (to say i just built another set myself today). or get help from arup on this forum he can build it for you for a very small charge. he could even source the parts and calculate spoke lengths for you in one go to save you all the hassle. could also disassemble that rear wheel and reuse the rim if you really want to keep the cost down.

A fixed gear shop, in my town? Had no idea. Heard the name though, they ride these retarded wagonbikes around at about walking pace with crazy slack chain tension. I keep wanting to lend them my chain breaker when I see them.
