dogsballs - thanks for the advice on removing the gold form the cranks, been wondering how to do that!
silver, flickwg, the cable can only come out of that side of the lever, you both right - it looks pretty weird but works just fine and has not got in the way yet - been riding it all this week with no issues.
The levers are made by Acor. Don't know a model, the packing just said, rather informatively, "brake levers". Found them from a link somewhere on this site - got them from biddlebikes - only place that seems to sell them, just be prepared to wait 3 weeks for delivery!
