My first fixed build, finished at last... almost

Posted on
  • A few weeks back I posted here to get some advice on building up a chrome Lygie frame my friend had given me. Lots of good advice came my way and finally after much scouring of ebay and other places it is finished, almost.
Just need to get some straps for the toe clips.
Since taking these pics the campag seatpost has had to be swapped out, no matter how tight i did it up the saddle kept on slipping backward causing me no end of nut ache.
Nothing special on it I don't think, just basic bits and pieces - managed to do the complete build for under £250 which was my aim so I'm happy.
Now I just have to get some hours in on it to get my brain to forget 30 years of freewheeling and remember not to try and stop pedalling all the time!
Thanks for all your advice along the way.

  • That looks really good!

  • that's come out nice!

  • those tyres look mental, what are they?

  • The tyres are Vittoria Randonneur 28's

As it's my first road bike after years of MTB fat tyre riding and it's winter I though I'd start off with something with a bit of width and with a bit of grip to it. Plus they were cheap :)

  • looks great - only a tiny problem the brake cable looks a little odd and as if it might get in the way, can you not put in the other side of the lever

  • very nice for first build. pity about the dent in the top tube. u could use caustic soda to get that gold off the cranks and polish them up as well.

  • Pretty. For sub 250 that's a gorgeous bike.

  • danDNA, nice bike - as mentioned before you might want to bring he cable out of the other side of the lever. but...what lever is it? - i've been looking for a silver crosslever and haven't found one.

  • dogsballs - thanks for the advice on removing the gold form the cranks, been wondering how to do that!

silver, flickwg, the cable can only come out of that side of the lever, you both right - it looks pretty weird but works just fine and has not got in the way yet - been riding it all this week with no issues.

The levers are made by Acor. Don't know a model, the packing just said, rather informatively, "brake levers". Found them from a link somewhere on this site - got them from biddlebikes - only place that seems to sell them, just be prepared to wait 3 weeks for delivery!

  • You could go for a Specialized crosstop lever and clean it up with caustic soda to make it look funky fresh

  • Well done. It's always worth the effort in the end.

  • fc9k You could go for a Specialized crosstop lever and clean it up with caustic soda to make it look funky fresh
or steal them of a london wrongster ;)

  • Does look well nice.

How do you always get cool stuff for free!! :)

Should have the "Geoff Clarke" up and running this weekend, should go for a race! - destined for A&E!

  • free things do just just seem to fall in my lap!

  • danDNA you can run the cable out the other side of the lever, i have them in black on my bike and i've got it running out the other side.

silver: i got my levers like that off ebay for £7 a pair i can't get on myeBay at work but when i get home i'll give you the link to the shop i got them from.

  • thanks for that Slack - ill give it a go now.
