  • ive only been riding fixed gear for about a week and i cant see myself riding anything else for a long time. its a conversion aswell and i hated riding with gears. i like the less is more approach. i can see shoppers being the new "in" thing. ive been seeing them everywhere including this one which ive had for 2 years

raleigh wayfarer (dont know the year) came with a sturmey archer 3 speed hub, hardly used brooks saddle, 50's style front and rear dynamo lights, everything clean shiny and working. all for......£40. best bargain ever

"i dont care what i ride, as long as im riding"

  • A £30 raleigh shopper of some description i got in dalston was my first conversion. loose geometry didn;t stop it being quite fast. but to be honest i like the look of them as they are. a mate of mine's been riding them for ages and as much as i;ve convinced him fixed gear is the way forward, i also see things from his point of view - they are very comfortable to ride.

Many of the above and shoppers, and skirt friendly horizontal dropout bikes, old skoolness, polo bikes etc and a couple of ready to roll fixies by Dawes (56) and Bianchi (58).

We love bikes at http://www.ocw.org.uk and plugs too.

I will post new pics next week once I have got a new snapper.

  • ...my lady's been on the same dutch shopper since '91.

    So ahead of her time...

  • Ha. So my mate with an old black mens bike with 3 speed hub is actually a hipster, and he call MY bike a fad.

    Sweet.

  • lpg I have set of dynamo lights you can buy off me for cheap. Would not beable to get them to you untill the new year.

Or I have an old Hurcules bike (need some restoration for sale)

    S.A dyno hub, three speed.

  • tommy, what's the BB and chainset like on that. looking for something vintage. yes, i know the perils of cotterpins, but with a 1950's bike there's no other way. :(

  • dogsballs tommy, what's the BB and chainset like on that. looking for something vintage. yes, i know the perils of cotterpins, but with a 1950's bike there's no other way. :(

    Hi dogsballs
The Italian guy (rough sleeper?) who rides around a crazy two-bike catamaran thing and fixes peoples bikes has a good-ish williams crank and chainring from about that era. Worth asking if you see him.

  • It seems to spin ok, don't seem too rusty, nothing a bit of chrome polish could would not sort out. I don't know about the b.b for play, but as with all of these old bikes replace the bearings and then adjust it up and you should be golden. The rear hub is branded as Hurcules but apparently this is just a rebranded of a S.A so is on a 42 or 43 mm chainline.

Would be just restoring it and not converting?

  • sorry lpg the dynamo lights just arent for sale. i was thinking about selling awhile ago, but theyre quite rare and they match the bike so well

  • I ride your mum and anyone who rides anything else is shit.

  • the way i see it, who cares if the current trend ends? it means load of people trying to offload gear which we can pick up for cheeeeeeeap.

  • ends?
    it's just getting started.

  • The Pistadex is apparently still strong...

  • The Raleigh 20 market is bullish.

  • Yes, but we'll have to watch out for the dead cat bounce...
