Somatically intolerant?

  • So, I might just be being an idjit, but...

I've been running a Soma track hub with a Soma lockring and one of those two-piece Miche sprockets sandwiched in the middle for about a week now. When sticking it all together, I noticed that the lockring seems too wide and hangs over the edge of the hub threads, even when fully wellied into place.

Didn't think it would be a problem. Then, cycling down City Rd from Angel towards Old St last night I locked up to take some wind from my sails only to feel that dreaded slip.

The sprockets seem the same size as some of my other one-pieces at home, which leads me to assume it's either the lockring or the hub itself. Anyone experience or know anything about this? Or is it just me being a muppet?

    Any ideas

  • How long since you fitted the miche carrier?

  • It's all new together. Maybe a week or two ago.
But I'm running another carrier on my other set-up and they seem identical.

Why do you ask? Do they tend to do something weird as they get older?

  • As it's newly fitted then I'd guess it just wasn't cranked together tight enough when you assembled..? check + re-tighten lockring after first few rides is advice I've seen bandied about on here by the gurus..
Had you been running it for ages and it slipped out of the blue then it would be much more unusual! and worrying..

  • sounds to me like the sprocket and carrier are a bit loose is all. get a chain whip on it. if it slipped a little but then stopped (did it also slip back the other way under load/acceleration?) then its just a tiny bit loose. i think.

  • Usual advice involves pedalling very hard up some big hills and not doing any back pedalling whilst you are about it.

But, I am not sure whether that isn't some ruse to get people to throw up with exhaustion at the top of Swain's Lane...

  • I did take the hub home and hit the beast with the chainwhip and lockring tool last night. And then used them properly, once my ire was spent.
What was strange was that I couldn't get it any tighter, even though there was some definite slippage scant minutes before. And it all looks fairly snug...

So, tonight I'll try stripping it, re-greasing it like crazy, and see if that's any better.
The lockring does look quite beefy though. But that might just have been a combo of exhausted eyes and paranoia seeing that...

Mashton: any excuse for a few hills is always welcoming for my lazy belly. I'll give that a whirl in the morrow.
& Matt/Provenrad: good to get a 2nd & 3rd diagnosis chaps, so thank you. It's hardly my first track, but first time that's ever happened. Freaked me a bit.
I'll let you know how it goes.

  • It's difficult to know whether you're advising a newbie / someone who has been riding track bikes since before I even knew what one was!
I was so proud the first time I unscrewed a cog through sheer braking force - that was in October. :-O
