There are shims commonly available to get around this- some stems even come with them!

They're cheap as chips... just get one.
They normally come free with 1 1/8 stems so if you ask nicely at your LBS they might have some to give away

The alter, that's it. It's bright yellow.
And I have a 1 1/8 steerer, so that was me screwed.
Still, only cost $50 or something via eBay, so not too much of a loss.

i'll see how i get along with the shim, heading off to LBS, will let you know
i have: 1" Ahead steerer and 1 1/8" stem.
anyway i can work it without shelling out for another stem?
or, if any of you have a 1" stem to get rid of that'll be great.
