Is my gearing a bit too aggressive?

RPM that's always the way things like that are reported, the angle is not to accuse the driver of anything.

so the classic:

"there were delays on the busy B666 today when the road had to be closed after a fatal accident. A cyclist collided with a lorry travelling northbound, the lorry driver is said to be shocked but unhurt"

is never gonna be:

"A lorry driver faces jail today after killing a cyclist he ran into with his HGV on the busy B666. If convicted of causing death by dangerous driving he faces a maximum term of 10 years"

That's because, chances are, the driver will get away with it!
