I suppose it depends on whether or not you need the pockets. The padding issue can be sorted out by having something flat against the back (such as your notebook in a sleeve). also, do you keep a lot of smaller things in your current bag? do you need the pockets? the more space you have to store useless stuff, the more likely you'll carry around things you don't need.
