i had dura ace lockrings on, which are english thread and it is loose. but once you tighten it up quite tight (which anyone should anyway) you wont feel any play because it's quite a small difference within those 5 or 6 threads. worse thing is after putting the cog on, there's only 3 threads left for the lockring to catch on.

it slipped a few times whilst trackstanding. and when i do a big skid the cog will just come off. and the lockring threads end up totally fscked. that's how i realised something's wrong. posted a question here, tramps gave me the answer and i know i destroyed a hub.

    so to answer your question:

i think i'm probably the only case i know of a stupid person putting the wrong lockring on. quite a lot of ppl have these hubs (and obviously bought the whole wheelset 2nd hand) and i haven't really heard anyone had the same problem.

in my case of wrong lockring: if you don't trackstand, don't skid, don't back pedal too much, with rotafix you should be able to get it on reasonably tight to not fall off during normal riding . what remained of my hub at the moment is a 17t cog that's totally stuck after a bit of an over the top rotafix. i wanted to free the cog but no matter what i try i couldn't get it off... yet.
