@ Ratboy: I recently built up a set, just followed advice from Sheldon Brown and it's actually straight forward.
I saw it as a challenge and so tried 3l3t and crowsfoot lacing for the pair, I was a bit worried how they would turn out but after a few hundred miles they still run true. Now building a second set with standard 3cross lacing and they are slightly easier to build purely because the truing seems more predictable. Truing is the bit that takes patience.I don't think I'd buy any pre-built wheels again, you've just got so much more spec choice if you build them yourself.
I did mine on a budget, reckoning I'd get a couple of years out of them: SJS track hubs 40 quid the pair, Mavic open sport rims 14 quid each, ACI double butted spokes for about a tenner per pair of wheels + rim tape works out at about 80 notes for a wheelset, and they work a treat.

sapim spokes meant to be the strongest (according to them).
for a given weight a mass produced cold forged hub should be stronger than a boutique cnc'd (only) hub (goldtec ?).
need wheel jig AND dishing tool OR a jig that you can check the dish with to diy.
£ for lb the best thing to invest your money in are the wheels, followed by the rest of the transmission because the mass goes forward AND around.

@ edmundane: For organising info in an open and honest way, use a wiki.
However, it would need more efffort on everyones part to put stuff in the right place.
I use wiki's often and they work really well.
