Miche Lockring on Phil Wood hub - yes or no?

Posted on
  • Sort of self explanatory, bought a 17t miche cog for my shiny new yellow deep v - phil wood (thanks a ton hovis!!), but the phil wood lockring doesn't fit tight against the cog (and cog carrier) so the cog is loose. Therefore, are miche lockrings compatible with phil wood hubs?

  • yes, I had the same situation a while back.

  • both are italian threading so should be fine.

  • P.S. I think you can use your Phil Wood lock-ring, if you just turn it around. I didn't want to mess up the side of the lock-ring which has the writing on it, so never did this. It was just a thought.

  • O RLY??!

i was thinking that but decided that somehow putting it on backwards wouldn't work. I think i'll just purchase a miche lockring and save the shiny phil wood for if i ever get a different rear cog.

    thanks guys

  • You can use a miche lockring but I don't know if it will help as they are just flat lockrings, so don't see how it would improve over the phil one. Another thing to bear in mind is that the miche lockring is absolutely crap quality.

The problem is probably that the Miche cog carrier is too thin to fill the cog threads on the hub. I was talking to someone else who was having the same problem with Miche. If that's the case then I would get a different brand of cog rather than risk stripping a Phil. The other solutions would be BB spacers behind the cog (which I wouldn't do on a Phil) or using a Surly lockring which overhangs the cog threads, but that won't work with Italian threaded hubs.

  • thanks for that momentum, i need a new miche lockring for my other bike anyway, so i'll try that solution first. The phil lockring does fit snug against the cog carrier, but because they have that raised bit at the back of them there's nothing resting against the actual cog, allowing it to rattle.

  • that someone must have be me !
Just went to Hollway bikeshop and got a spacer for free !! (Great guy there in the workshop).
I just put the spacer on and its tight as a camel arse in a sandstorm now !
    Thanks again Momentum..
I personally would not buy the Miche again. That Adapter system is not much of a feature

  • Its really only useful if you actually change cogs regularly. I find it gives a quieter ride than the stock wheels did on my pista. I reckon i might take it off the phils and put an EAI cog on there.

which reminds me. EAI on phil - yes or no? :)

  • if you're shelling out to buy an EAI why don't you just get a phil cog??

  • EAI are 17 quid from hubjub, aren't phils like 30 odd? I was gonna buy a phil one but condor didnt have any.

  • yeah but it's worth the cash. a phil hub deserves a phil cog. period.

  • BLB are advertising Phil cogs for 25 GN and will have some stock next week.

  • hmmmmmmmm checks adoubletap's post-count yes i trust you. Nice one will pick one up next week some time.

  • ^ I was super skeptical too but this (sprockets?) was confirmed to me in store yesterday. After a brief argument between staff members. Whilst someone dropped a grand of cyclescheme voucher on something that clearly wasn't worth it.

  • oh dear. Havent seen phil woods with cutouts on the flanges before...?

  • SLR optional cutouts to save weight.

  • ahhhh. bet they're more expensive.

  • Yeah, extra machining required: http://www.philwood.com/High%20Flange.htm

  • damn, I too have fallen foul of this miche-on-phil thing. I'm gonna have to buy a new sprocket aren't i? has anyone flipped the phil lockring round as mentioned in post no.4 above? fucking miche.

  • just spent a while trying to figure out lockring brands/threads. this helped:

  • try the threading the lockring by hand, if it nice and smooth and not wobbling, shud be ok.

if it's tight and wobbly, or loose and wobbly, dont go there!
