Broken key in Abus D-lock

Posted on
  • A female friend broke her old abus key in her new abus d-lock, right off at the base. the d-lock is firmly positioned around the seat-tube and rear tyre so theres no room to play in there. her boyfriend has tried to fill it will liquid nitrogen and smash it with a hammer, tried to remove key with tweezers; but no luck. are there any tricks, instead of angle grinding and killing a £60 lock?? can whisper if too dodgy.

  • Push the broken key in fully (so all levers are engaged). Then get a pair of sharp long nose pliers, into the top and bottom of keyhole and turn to open. You can then worry about removing the broken blade at your leisure.

  • push the key in, put a little (very important) superglue on the base, stick base to key... wait, open lock.

  • Ooh, that sounds good. Quick! Get her to try it. I need to know...

  • is this one of those 'i have a friend' questions? did you brake your key off in your lock?.....you muppet!

this won't work as its the wrong key ;)

will try the superglue, but the end is pretty fooked with all the other messing around.

  • No way will super glue have enough hold to turn that key !

You could try some steel epoxy (from Maplins™), but even that may not have the hold.

  • I remember an episode of ER where Dr Greene removed a foreign body from a kid's ear by employing a similar superglue-based technique. I don't suppose anyone else saw that? One of the ladies, maybe... :-P

  • If all else fails you could try and use Rush's legendary prog rock anthem 'Spirit of the Radio' or any of the tracks from the 2112 album.

I once freed a seized lock using only the intro from 'The Temples of Syrinx'.

  • Try a powerful magnet on the broken key. It may not pull it out completely, but it might give you enough purchase to get some tweezers/needle nose pliers on it.

  • if he was willing to fill it with liquid nitrogen and smash it I don't understand why the circular saw has been ruled out

abus keys aren't magnetic ;) , pity as we have a monster one right next to me.

tomasito, yeah still worthwhile trying, especially seeing the bike is locked right in front of security, hahaaa!!

  • film it from a distance like those guys did in New York. See if anybody gives you any trouble. I expect nobody will bat an eyelid

  • i bat an eyelid once......spend a night in a cell

  • tried Cillit Bang??

    Otherwise bang this out:

    bbq bonanza!

  • aidan i bat an eyelid once......spend a night in a cell

shouldn't go winking at coppers aidan
