le car Hiroshi Fujiwara's Etchins updated with WHITE tyres..
I imagine when he rides that bike there is a trio of virgins riding in front spreading delicate rose petals (a la coming to america) before him as to prevent the tyres being tainted by the common tarmac.

I'm going to have to say - I don't like it. Too gaudy; bejewelled drops? Sorry, just... no.

I imagine when he rides that bike there is a trio of virgins riding in front spreading delicate rose petals (a la coming to america) before him as to prevent the tyres being tainted by the common tarmac.Let's not kid ourselves, here, that bike is highly unlikely to ever see tarmac, except if it's looking out a window, gazingly longingly at the freedom it will be so cruelly denied.
This is the bike equivalent of that pristine pair of original Jordans that some collector keeps in a hermetically-sealed box 'just to have them'. I mean, the Paul Smith Mercian was silly enough, but at least some of those have a vague chance of being put to use.
I see very little difference between Hiroshi's Hetchins and this:
They're both going to sit somewhere, looking pretty, and will never be in danger of fulfilling their true calling in life.

edit : some of the pics did not show up I think:
I've been to his office in Tokyo, and I've never seen that many nice bikes (his and his co-"workers"') in such a small space... he had that new look carbon track bike, a bianchi carbon track bike, a ganwell pro carbon track bike, and countless Cinellis and NJS bikes lying around.
-
• #908
Oh, I've no doubt that Hiroshi rides, I just don't think he's ever likely to ride that Hetchins. Saying that, on reflection, he's rich beyond belief, so maybe he would...

that black mark in the middle of the tread of that supposingly all white zaffiro tyre shows that it's been ridden somehow, not for long distances though i'm sure.

you gotta remember that bikes are actually CHEAP for anyone with a proper job, let alone a streetwear millionaire...
If you compare to a car or even a shitty scooter, what's a full carbon BMC bike?..
-
• #915
+1 to that. My mate does track days and it's £500 a go just in tyres. It gets more expensive if you come off the track...
I always like to think about that when I'm paying out for my bike.

turpe
They're both going to sit somewhere, looking pretty, and will never be in danger of fulfilling their true calling in life. And you're an authority on the true calling are you?
Who's to say the true calling of the bike isn't to sit around and look pretty and instill in those who get to view such things some great appreciation for the object, form and function and to evoke questions of design, art, life, the universe and string theory.
What you get from witnessing it, is obviously bound to differ from someone else. But then, if it's art you've just validated its existence by having an emotion evoked that you felt that you needed to rant about it. In which case as art, sitting around looking pretty is precisely the true calling of it.
I also found it gross. But for entirely different reasons than you did.

i think what i ment was....when it comes done to the asthetics of a bike i admire someones ability to make a bike look nice without spending a great deal of money....maybe its because i have no money...im just bitter.

I had always thought that it is not the bike alone that makes a bike look good it is the bike and rider in motion. Obviously some bikes look more appealing than others, but my first thought is allways; "I'd love to ride that..." and then depending on the bike; off road, uphill, downhill, to the pub, on the track....and so on.

for me, as with a lot of art, music and design out there these days, it gets disgusting when people are DOING IT FOR THE SAKE OF DOING IT.
same goes for this bike.
how many kids enrol on a design course really wanting to do design and not because they think it's "cool"? how many of those shitty indie bands out there are making music because they really feel it, have something to express out of a necessity and not just doing it so they can pose? dance punk everyone...
