Oh no - my browser is double posting tonight.
Anyway...
Does anyone run with mixed sprocket/chain/chainring sizes?
I'm on 1/8" chain and sprocket but 3/32" chainring. -

both?
1/8 cog (i like miche cause there easy to change)
1/8 chain (never going to break and better bushes)
3/32 chain ring (cause there cheaper)if you've got a chainset with 144pcd it may be hard to get 3/32 rings.

I recently wacked on a 1/8 half link chain on 3/32 chainring and sprocket. riding fine.

I have 4 bikes on 3/32 and 2 on 1/8. When clean, they ride the same.
I'll soon be running 1/8 chain over a 3/32 cog (if dogs comes up with the goods).
I've not broken any chains. People who break chains have typically fscked the installation.
Where did you get the "1/8th has better bushes" thing?
Sheldon suggests 3/32 for most road ss/fixed conversions (http://www.sheldonbrown.com/harris/fixed.html#chains).

Run what works for you but there's no reason to use 1/8th unless your thighs are bigger than Chris Hoy's. -

I still think the 7/64 setup is the connoisseur's choice.

dear old sheldon also suggests filling down hollow axles and using a QR skewer as a kludge for chain tension with vertical dropouts (mmm, think i save that 1 for the emergency).
to be fair, i ran 3/32 for years with out much problem (2 chain launches in 18 years, but i don't think chain width had anything to do with that).
for me it's about using miche sprockets which are good quality, easy to change and cheap and i don't think they come in the 3/32 flavour.
obviously if you run a 1/8 cog you've got to run the chain as well.
the thing about the bushes in the chain is that modern multispeed chains are i think bushingless so they can make them thinner and easier to construct, i admit this is hearsay as i've not dismantled a chain this much and of course you are right that there should be very little perceptible difference between the 2.
the other thing for me is, despite not having legs like chris hoy, i use the chain as my primary brake (and i'm not that bothered about weight) so the added width goes well with my fat head ( @,@ ) . -

btw burrows did a prototype of his 'lotus bike' with a 1/4" pitch, don't remember the width.

His "kludge" was experimental and happens to work. Clever guy.
This seems to indicate Miche make 3/32 cogs for their splined setup: http://www.jensonusa.com/store/product/CS409D00-Miche+Track+Cog.aspx
I'm not really bothered with the choice either way. Basically if a bike I get has existing 1/8th parts, I will add 1/8th bits and same with 3/32.
The only full fixed driveline I've done was using a Miche track groupset which was 1/8th. I'd just have readily used 3/32 - if they made it. -

sheldon is the don. i'm sure the QR thing works if you need it to. his gain ratio is by far the best way to calculate the gearing to use, brilliant that he coded a calculator into his site that includes tire dimensions. really sad that his illness has stopped him riding.
as a matter of interest what 3/32 do you use?
i only have room for 1 bike so it has to do a lot of different things which means changing the gearing and therefore sometimes the chain length, i don't think hyper glide is too good for that (my next fixed is going to have really long track ends).thanks for the miche link (the miche site gives no indication that they do different widths).

i run the same set up as dr oblong. miche 1/8th on the back and 3/32 at the front. on my bianchi this runs quieter than when i had it with the original wheels and therefore all 3/32.

1/8th for hard men - 3/32th for homosexuals.

• #21
and the mixed set up is just confused?

Indeed, or 'bi'.

Er, yeah.
I usually use cheap SRAM 8spd chains.
Shimano 105 on the roadie (no need for lighter DA chains). I'm still using 9spd geared, btw. -
• #24
yeah i think i'm going to go for 1/8 sproket and chain with a 3/32 chainring only because it's going to be cheaper.. that and i can't find 130pcd 1/8 chainrings in 44t..

tynan 1/8th for hard men - 3/32th for homosexuals.
In which case I'm bisexual.
Running a Dura-ace 3/32 upfront and EAI Superstar 1/8 rear with a shadow conspiracy half-link finishing the setup.
if i'm buying a new sprocket chain and chainring what should i go for 1/8 or 3/32?
ta..
