no less than 3 cross on the rear.
dont really know what cheap hub you can get for a 28... are you heavy?

If you are using your 28hole rim then I think lacing should be 3x or 4x
As for cheap hubs - I suspect theres little choice for 28H as they tend to be for racing? I may be wrong, but on-one, SJS etc dont have any 28h..

My beater is a Pug convert.
The most important thing is that you have a seatpost that fits. After that it is all gravy.
I used an on-one rear hub (36H)... very cheap, but holding up well. Unless the rim is in good nick, I would just get another one. 28h will be tricky to get hold of IMHO, although SJS may have something.
I did my first wheel build in exactly the same circumstances. Good to have done, but the wheel was never perfect. Not sure if it was worth the effort...

I'm pretty sure that 4x onto a 28h rim is close to impossible. I'd imagine that the crossing points close to the spoke holes would cross the hub flange and over the edge of the next spoke.
4x is OK, for 36h and not ideal for 32h.
3x is fine for most applications.Personally unless the rim is something special, I'd buy new rims and get the best value hubs you can source to match. I'd stick with 32 or 36h. 36 if you're heavy, but as you claim the bike won't get a beating I'd go for 32h since you'll have more choice of hubs.

thanks all for the advice, I had a feeling a new rim was probably going to be required - with this in mind... what would be a good combination of hub, rim, spokes if i were to go for 32h?

DT swiss double butted spokes, cxp 22s seem to get good praise, not really up on hubs.

bstards, no-one does 280mm black spokes so i can lace my deep v's onto my goldtecs!
I need recommendations.
I'm Converting an old peugeot road frame, figured i'd get the rear wheel sorted out first, then look at the BB for chainline etc.
The rear dropouts are roughly 24mm and I'm hoping to use a 28 spoke rim i've already got.
Suggestions for what hub to use, preferably not too expensive? The bike won't be getting too much hammer so the hub doesn't need to be totally bombproof, fixed/fixed or fixed/free.
I'd also planned to build the wheel myself, my first go at wheel-building.. what spoke pattern would anyone recommend, i know 28 spoke is not ideal for rear wheel.
thanks in advance for any advice.
