May not be open all the time - when I used to help them out it was Saturday mornings only, but that may have changed with their new location

Its mainly open on Saturday mornings when they sell off the bikes they have made during the week. If you are just looking for parts or bikes not working you can generally ask if you can have a look around and buy as is. They used to allow you to do that anyway.

  • my favorite is* Faber's cyclery in San Jose, California.

It's totally magic, and it's more than just a "shop". the first time i visited, i had been drawn down to san jose for a bike swap meet being held in an adjacent lot, but it was faber's itself that i ended up returning to again and again. there's an amazing collection of bikes in varying condition; some beaters, some magnificent-- Alex (the owner of the business)
has some really remarkable bikes stashed away, and had plans for opening a museum.
Alex is helpful, and fair, and generous, and Faber's a great place to rummage for parts, and to get help with various bike projects, often while enjoying a beer under the shade of the pepper tree.

(*hopefully not "was", but while searching the internet for links, i've found a couple worrying mentions of it possibly having closed in august, and another that lists it for sale.)

  • Condors original shop, used to love that place. Sigh......

  • gordy's in barnstaple.

a wierd shop in a decrepit arcade, stacked to the ceiling with bikes. repairs cost £1.25.

  • Anyone remember Paolo Garbini?

  • jonny and this one which a friend of mine bought from roberto

Yeah saw this frame as a complete bike at a jumble, so a dealer buys it from the jumble for £300, takes it apart and sell all the parts separately on ebay, then someone buys the frame and is now looking for parts to build it up...

  • The chap at Trackstar in NY, was absolutely golden when I was there last weekend.

I've heard a couple of people moan about Zack's (?) off-handedishness, but I had no such issues.
The only issue was the amount of stuff I wanted to walk out with.
My wallet-guard (the gf) was thankfully on top form ("No you don't need four cycling caps. No you won't get 'round to selling excess copies of MASH." etc.)

  • @ addie - do you have a copy of mash?, i still haven't seen it

    borrow/copy?

i woulld have bought spares off of you

Sadly, the rumours of Faber's demise are not exagerrated. I live just up the coast in a well-known, hilly city and I have a few friends in SJ and San Mateo that practically wept when they found out Faber's was closing.

concept bespoke without a bank manager

  • dredge of the week.

  • Where's the best place for second hand bikes in London? I'm trying to find a nice cheap ish hybrid or similar for my sister.
Gumtree is bike thief central and need to test it out with her so ebay is out of the running.
    Anyone know any gems?

  • this place took the biscuit for me: Cicli Turci in Bolzano, Italy.

Full of old steel Colnagos, De Rosas, Merckxs, Gios, Olmo etc etc etc.
Shitloads of old Campag stuff chucked in boxes all over the place. Its like a den. To get to certain bits of the shop you have to duck under low hanging bikes, step over boxes of components etc.
The old dude who runs it was interesting too. My bad Italian was good enough for a brief chat but he was obviously an old relic who knew his stuff.

    Walthamstow recycling project

"Bike sales Recycled bikes are available for members of the public to purchase on the first Saturday of each month between 1-3pm, prices start from £45. Children's bikes are also available from £20."

Afraid it'll be a bit too big for her. It's a Kona Dew City but it's a 56cm so probably more suited to someone 5'8" or so and above.
