  • cool I'm talking to you on an iPhone I love it fantastic
    annnyway

  • More your style?

-Dom Joly "YEAH, I'M IN A FORUM, ITS SHIT!!!"

  • that's fantastic

  • I have posted a few times here from my ipod touch over the last few weeks, it's like having the internet in your pants.

  • smeear you have an iphone?(not that i think its cool(you couldnt get any cooler))

  • oh jeeesus, Chris, can you ask if they would work with any sim card or does it have to be o2?

  • Has to be O2 unless you 'illegally' unlock it, and even then i think any software update from apple would invalidate the unlock. Or something.

  • bollocks too bad o2's the crappiest network in the universe, after 3 of course

  • What's wrong with O2?

  • bad signal over here in the east, vodafone gave me full signal in the fuckin peherenthian islands, o2 doesn't work in hackney

  • +1 for 3

    ...(=4)

  • asm Has to be O2 unless you 'illegally' unlock it, and even then i think any software update from apple would invalidate the unlock. Or something.

Nah, it's easy and safe - a restore from itunes resets everything back to factory - it used to be chancy (you could even 'brick' the iphone) but things have moved on, I cracked my 'touch' on the first day I got it, I can now run all sorts of useful stuff not included on the shop bought model.

Also, I don't think hacking the iPhone is illegal in any way that I can think of ? Perhaps distributing 3rd party software that modifies Apple's own software may be illegal (for the distributor to distribute but certainly not for the user to use) - but how you employ property you have bought is largely outside the remit of the criminal justice system.

  • Apple issued automatic software updates a while back that screwed up a bunch of unlocked iPhones here in the US.

They claim that the problems were 'unavoidable', but hairy conspiracy theorists in high-tech log cabins think that coding may have been included for the specific purpose of cutting off those that chose to defy Apple's desire for all US iPhones to be on AT&T.

    Just saying.

Buy iPhone - unlock it - do not update the software = job done.

  • No, they issue the updates via the web browser, and you don't get the option of not updating.

    Oh yes you do !

If you crack the iPhone - you would generally then disable the automatic updating as well as sew up a few of Apple's security oversights (like the TIFF exploit that allows the phone to be cracked in the first place).

** I am using 'unlock' / 'hack' / 'crack' interchangeably here.

  • Gotcha. I'm not overly tech-minded, so you're mostly likely right. I just know there were a lot of upset Yanks with useless iPhones a month back.

  • There's not really any point in unlocking an iPhone and using another SIM card in it. You get an unlimited data plan on the iPhone plan, which you'll want if you use any of the web features. On a normal contract the bill would get big real quick.

But you get bugger all minutes with the £35 a month package. With T-Mobile I could get for £32.50 what you get on the £45 O2 iPhone tarrif.

    edit: that includes unlimited internet.

  • I don't get why people go crazy of apple products, they didn't invent the ipod (large capacity hard-drive based mp3 player) or the smartphone, my current phune which I've had for 18 months does everything the iphone can do as did my treo 3 years before that (excepting wifi).....I bought my 20gb hard drive based mp3 player before the first ipod was released it also had a load of features the ipod didn't such as VIDEO and real time stereo mp3 recording....yet it was cheaper than the first ipod......so why do most people think that Apple have "invented" these things or even that they're better...I would beg to differ.....

I had a 20GB hard drive mp3 player also but it was bigger and uglier than my brothers iPod when he got it 6 months later. The difference is that Apple make the same products but make them so much more appealing to the fashion mob. Also most of their produts are very easy to use compared to other companies offerings. The iPhone does pretty much the same as most smartphones but it does it in a way that anyone can pick up in an afternoon. some people would find it impossible to get movies onto their smartphones or to set the internet up or access their email accounts through their smartphones. The iPhone just makes it easier for people. It's also a bonus for people who can because we appreciate how irritating it can be to get these things setup. I wont be buying an iPhone because of the price but my girlfriend's getting me an iPod touch for christmas time. Can't wait!
